"My agent asked me to sign something before we even looked at a house. Is that normal?"
Yes, and here's why it actually works in your favor.
As of last year, buyers working with a real estate agent are now required to sign a Buyer Representation Agreement before touring homes together. This isn't something I made up or something specific to my office, it's a nationwide change to how real estate works across the country.
What does it actually mean for you?
It means that before we ever pull into a driveway in Sunbury, Powell, Apple Valley, or Mount Vernon together, we sit down and talk through exactly how I work, what I'm doing for you, and what if anything, you'd be responsible for. Everything is disclosed upfront, in writing, before you're ever under any pressure.
It does not lock you into a long-term relationship.
It does not mean you're committed to buying a specific home, and it does not mean commissions are set in stone (they are always negotiable).
What it does mean is that you have an agent who is legally and professionally committed to protecting your interests from the very first showing.
