Did you recently have storm repairs done on your home, or are projects currently underway? Before you close out your insurance claim or sign off on the job, don't overlook a critical final step: a Home Performance Test.

Major storm repairs—like new siding, roof fixes, window replacements, or insulation work—can significantly impact your building's envelope and airflow. A quick diagnostic test ensures that contractors sealed everything properly, leaving no hidden air leaks, drafty gaps, or moisture risks behind.

Don't guess when it comes to your home's safety and efficiency. Schedule an unbiased home performance assessment with Insight today to make sure your home is performing at its best! (630)283-2248 or visit insightpsinc.com

It might surprise you to learn that radon levels can fluctuate significantly, sometimes even within a single day. Because radon is a radioactive, odorless gas that serves as the second leading cause of lung cancer, understanding these changes is vital for your health.

Several factors can cause radon levels to shift:

Weather Patterns: Changes in the weather and outdoor temperatures can impact how much gas is drawn into your home.
Building Operations: Opening windows and doors to "air out" a house can temporarily lower concentrations, which is why "closed building conditions" are required for accurate testing.
Structural Changes: Radon enters through natural escape routes like cracks in the foundation or sump pump pits; any shifts in these entry points can alter levels.
Daily Fluctuations: Levels naturally rise and fall throughout a 24-hour period.

Because these levels are always moving, a professional screening is the only way to truly know if your home is safe.

Protect your home and your family. Have Insight Property Services come out to perform a professional radon test. (630)283-2248

As the seasons change and flowers bloom, allergens and pollutants often follow. While it may seem like common sense, being proactive about your indoor environment is vital for protecting your family, especially children and older adults. Clean air is the foundation of well-being, protecting us from invisible airborne irritants, lingering pollutants, and long-term respiratory issues.

Keeping the air inside your home fresh and clean is essential for several reasons:

Indoor air can be more polluted than outdoor air: Pollutant levels indoors can sometimes be two to five times—and occasionally more than 100 times—higher than outdoor levels.
Invisible threats accumulate: Everyday activities like cooking, heating, and cleaning release airborne pollutants into enclosed spaces. As modern homes become increasingly airtight to save energy, these pollutants can become trapped.
Health and well-being are at stake: Poor air quality is linked to eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, and fatigue. It can also worsen asthma and contribute to long-term cardiovascular issues.

If you are concerned about your indoor air quality now, don't let seasonal allergies or hidden pollutants keep you down. Have the Insight team out to conduct a comprehensive Home Performance and Air Quality Test to identify allergens, mold spores, pet dander, and VOCs circulating in your home. Building Science is BS! 😏😉

Joe and Eileen Konopacki met up with some other industry leaders at a meeting of “BS + Beer Boston”.

Peter Yost, Building Science sage and self-professed “Wingnut,” collaborates with Cody Pelletier, owner/CEO of Laurel Windows, reimagining window design and installation to improve high performance builds. They talked about installation sequencing, water management strategy, air sealing, and integration with modern wall assemblies. The discussion inspired questions, ideas, and solutions from attendees that included Steven Baczek - Architect, BS’er Mark Wille, and high-per builder Josh Brennecke (featured recently on The Build Show), and Insight’s own Joe Konopacki.

Disclaimer: drinks may have contributed directly to a few designs!

Thanks to BS + Beer Boston for fostering the high performance building community in the Boston area.

Insight’s Joe Konopacki is on The Build Show latest episode! In this episode, builder Steve Baczek talks about the importance of a mid-construction blower door test on a home before insulation and drywall are installed.

Building airtightness is crucial not just for energy savings, but also for long-term durability, moisture control, and maximizing HVAC and window performance. During the on-site testing, the team used artificial fog to visually locate and pinpoint remaining gaps in the building envelope.

Today, we're shining a spotlight on one of the unsung heroes of energy audits: The Manometer!

Simply put, a manometer is a fancy pressure gauge. In home performance testing, it's essential for measuring the tiny pressure differences between inside your house and the outside, and between different zones within the house. These small pressure imbalances are a HUGE clue when tracking down air leaks!

Manometers are used during three different tests: blower door, duct leakage and zonal pressure testing. We use it to measure the pressure induced by the blower door fan, which allows us to calculate how leaky your entire house is. During duct leakage testing it isolates the ductwork, and helps us determine if your heating and cooling delivery system is losing precious conditioned air to unconditioned spaces (like attics or crawlspaces). We check the pressure relationship between different rooms and the main body of the house during zonal pressure testing. Negative or positive pressure in a room can indicate improper ventilation, back drafting hazards, or hidden air leaks impacting comfort.

The manometer gives us the precise, quantitative data needed to pinpoint problems, prioritize fixes, and ensure your home is sealed, safe, and comfortable. It's the difference between guessing where the air leaks are and knowing where they are!

Want to see our manometer in action during a comprehensive Home Performance Test? Schedule your audit with the INSIGHT team today (630)283-2248
