Just because an energy-saving tip sounds smart doesn’t mean it actually saves money. A recent Popular Science article breaks down a few common home energy myths—like closing vents in unused rooms, leaving fans on to “cool” an empty room, or constantly changing the thermostat—and explains why some of these habits can actually WASTE energy instead of saving it.

The big takeaway: real savings come from understanding how your HVAC system actually works, not from quick fixes that only seem efficient. Worth a read if you want to cut your utility bill. https://www.popsci.com/diy/home-energy-conservation-myths/

If you think your home can be saving more energy have the INSIGHT team come out for a home performance test (630)283-2248

BIG CODE CHANGES ARE HERE: Are you ready?

We are just under ONE WEEK away from our Duct and Envelope Tightness (DET) Verifier training course in Melrose Park!

If you are a builder, inspector, or HVAC professional in Illinois, this is a critical training. As of late 2025, Illinois officially adopted the strict 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) standards.

What does this mean for you?
Stricter Compliance: The state now enforces tighter regulations on residential new construction and extensive retrofits.
High Demand Skill: Homes must pass mandatory duct and blower door tightness testing to get their certificate of occupancy.
New 2024 Framework: This exact training covers the newly implemented 2024 standards, ensuring your testing methods are legally compliant and up to date.

Don't guess on the new codes—master them. Gain the official certification needed to perform diagnostic testing and keep projects moving forward. And don’t forget certification needs to be renewed every year.

Tools of the Trade: Smoke Puffer/Smoke Pencil

Ever wonder exactly where that draft is coming from? Whether you’re an HVAC tech, energy rater, or just a DIYer trying to seal up a leaky home, a smoke pencil/puffer is an absolute game changer. Smoke puffers are great to use for troubleshooting, especially because it gives a steady stream and is easy to carry in the toolbag.
Unlike those old-school smoke candles that make a huge mess, these little puffers create a clean, non-toxic v***r that lets you see exactly what the air is doing in real-time. It makes it so easy to find leaks in ductwork or pinpoint exactly which part of a window or door is letting the air in. It can also be used to check for negative pressure or just to visualize how the air is balancing out in a room. Another positive is that this is a troubleshooting tool that is portable enough to live in a toolbag.

Feeling drafts in your home? Have the INSIGHT team come out with our smoke puffers for a home energy audit (630)283-2248

Solar power isn't just for homeowners anymore. A new wave of "plug-and-play" technology is making renewable energy accessible to apartment dwellers and renters across the country.

These compact systems, often called balcony solar, consist of small solar arrays (typically 300–800 watts) designed to hang directly on railings. Unlike traditional rooftop installations, these require little to no professional setup—you simply plug them into a standard electrical outlet to start generating power.

Why It’s Gaining Momentum:
Cost Savings: These systems can help cut annual electricity bills by providing a direct source of supplemental power.
Renter Friendly: Because they are portable and require minimal installation, they are an ideal solution for those who don't own their roof.
Legislative Progress: While already widespread in Europe, dozens of U.S. states are now considering legislation to remove regulatory barriers and simplify adoption.
Safety & Integration: New safety standards are being established to ensure these systems integrate seamlessly and safely with the existing power grid.

As the U.S. looks to reduce emissions, these small-scale systems offer a practical way for urban residents to participate in the green energy transition. Read the full story: https://www.technologyreview.com/2026/05/07/1136933/balcony-solar-boom/

Are you familiar with a v***r barrier? It's generally a specialized plastic or foil sheet installed inside of your walls, floors, and ceilings—and it's a major shield for your house! Crazy to think something so thin can actually make a HUGE difference.

Think of it as your home's personal moisture bodyguard. It keeps your structure sound, your energy bills lower, and prevents those nasty water-related issues.

V***r barriers keep moisture out of wall cavities and crawl spaces, eliminating the damp conditions where mold, mildew, and wood rot love to thrive.
Less mold means fewer airborne allergens and a healthier, safer breathing environment for your family!
Insects and rodents are drawn to humid, damp spaces. Keeping your crawl space or underbelly dry makes your home instantly less inviting to unwelcome guests.
When insulation gets wet, it loses its power! A v***r barrier keeps insulation dry, so your HVAC system doesn't have to overwork itself.

Protecting your biggest investment starts with controlling moisture! Have moisture concerns or other aspects of your home? Call the INSIGHT team today (630)283-2248
