So, today is my 37th Birthday! I'm grateful to be here and hopeful for what God has in store.

I want to take this time to share some of the lessons I've learned in my 37 years here.

1. Love Does Not Hurt.

Contrary to popular belief, love does not hurt. Lost love hurts like hell. But, love. Love does not hurt. It's not easy. That's for certain. But it sure as hell does not hurt. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 lists everything that love is... and hurtful isn't there.

2. Speak Your Mind.

Here's an analogy. If someone steps on your foot, it makes no sense to curse them out in your head lol They may not even realize they did it. It's much better to let them know they stepped on your foot and hurt you, politely. Most people don't walk around mashing toes and they would be mortified to know they crushed your foot. They can't know you're hurting if you hide your pain. Speak up. Communication is key in all relationships, platonic or romantic. Lack of communication has killed 99% of relationships. In my estimation, communicating too much hasn't killed any.

3. Stick With It.

What you focus on expands. The grass is NOT greener on the other side. It's greener where you water it. In almost every facet of my life so far I've seen this principle at work from career to relationships. The difference between success and failure, is whether or not you keep going. If you want your relationship/friendship/career/etc to be better, dig in and keep going. This is not an excuse to water a dead lawn though. I know it's hard to tell sometimes but funny enough, you can get a better idea of what's causing the brown color in your grass by following a CONSISTENT watering schedule.

4. You Control You.

My dad, the late great Michael Norris, told me when I was 16... "Son. The only thing you can control is you." I've literally lived by this my entire life. I'm at peace with this simple truth. I'm NOT in control of everything, just me. I can only do my part. I can only choose to water the grass or not. God is in control of everything else. Whether the sun shines or it's cloudy is in His hands.

5. Do It. Now.

To think we have tomorrow is arrogant. Tomorrow is not promised. Love people. Now.

I called my Mom Donna Hunt Norris the other day and the first thing she said was "Hi son, I just finished praying for you!" With the kind of year she's been having facing health challenge after health challenge, this says everything you need to know about my Mom. She still found herself praying about little old me.

I love you so much Mom and I thank God for you. I thank God that through it all, you've kept this same smile and positive energy. You still radiate love. You still give of yourself and think it not robbery to pray for everyone else. I couldn't ask for a better mother and confidant. You are my selfless rock. Dependable and wise. I will always be a proud Mama's Boy. Happy 62nd Birthday Mom! Cheers to you!
