Homeward NYC Our mission is to provide housing and wraparound services that empower homeless young mothers, LGBTQ young people and older adults to live life forward.

We began in 1989 with an Upper West Side mixed-age residence that is a transitional family shelter for homeless mothers and their children and long-term, affordable housing for low-income and homeless seniors. In 2011, we created a first of its kind LGBTQ young adult supportive housing site in West Harlem. In 2015 we opened a Bronx LGBTQ site. In 2020, we reorganized West End Residences and our True Colors Housing for LGBTQ young adults as Homeward NYC. Our mission remains the same: to provide housing and wraparound services that empower homeless young mothers, LGBTQ young adults and seniors to live life forward.

As students head back to school, Homeward NYC would like to recognize the local schools, students and literacy groups who volunteer, fundraise, and donate items in support of our residents.

When high school volunteer Josh A. and his mom, Dr. Michele Licht, helped provide childcare during a daylong spa retreat for young mothers at Homeward UWS, they saw firsthand how transformative a single day of rest can be.

Hearing moms say it was their first chance in months to focus on themselves, Josh was inspired to do more.

Using our peer-to-peer fundraising toolkit, Josh set out with a goal: "Every mom deserves a holiday." He launched a campaign to fund a second retreat during the holiday season—raising over $2,000 from 24 generous donors! 🎁🌟

Thanks to Josh’s dedication, Homeward NYC hosted another restorative spa day in December. Young mothers enjoyed dedicated pampering, intentional self-care, and childcare support, plus wellness toolkits to continue their self-care routines at home.

Josh also hosts a popular story time for our youngest residents where moms are encouraged to participate alongside their children.

On August 6, our Upper West Side mixed-age residence held a special onsite book fair in our community room, hosted by Ariel Landau, founder of Second Chapter.

Second Chapter gathers brand-new surplus books from independent bookstores and brings them to underserved NYC communities. Ariel set up a beautiful pop-up shop right in our residence, giving young mothers, their babies and toddlers, and our older adult residents the opportunity to shop and select titles—completely free of charge! We were also able to fully replenish our onsite community library.

The event encouraged literacy, family engagement, and wonderful intergenerational conversations. One of the most heartwarming moments was watching young mothers sit together in the community room, reading directly to their babies and creating instant moments of family bonding.

Thank you, Ariel, for bringing the joy of books and the magic of a local bookstore right to our front door! ❤️

On August 21, Project First Day (a program by Projects With Care) brought huge smiles to the school-aged children living in our Upper West Side family shelter.

Every single child received a personalized back-to-school bundle curated specifically for them—including:

🎒 A brand-new backpack packed with grade-specific supplies

👟 A fresh first-day outfit and new shoes chosen in their exact sizes, favorite colors, and interests

💌 Handwritten notes filled with encouraging words to kick off the school year

While the average age of our youngest residents is 25 months, our UWS location is home to around 25 children aged 5 and up each year. One young mother shared how deeply touched she was that volunteers took the time to write personalized cards alongside providing the essential supplies.

Partnering with incredible organizations like Projects With Care allows us to provide comfort, dignity, and a sense of normalcy for the young families in our shelter during important milestones.

Neighborhood partnerships that stand the test of time! 🏫💙

This back to school, we recognize the local schools, students and literacy groups who volunteer, fundraise and donate items.

Since our founding, The Calhoun School has been a dedicated partner of Homeward NYC, bringing energy, creativity, and care to our UWS site.

Over the years, Calhoun Upper School students have shown up for our residents in so many meaningful ways:

🎈 Hosting birthday parties for young families

💆‍♀️ Organizing relaxing spa days for mothers

🎃 Decorating spaces for holiday celebrations

🥞 Hosting warm breakfasts for our seniors

🎶 Performing music during Soup & Songs meals through the student club, Calhoun Harmony

Much of this incredible student engagement is led by Debbie Aronson, Director of Calhoun’s Community Service Learning Program since 1994.

💬 “Our partnership is invaluable, and we really treasure the special relationship with our longtime neighbors,” shares Debbie.

Through Calhoun’s Community Service Learning Program, students don’t just volunteer—they advocate. They raise awareness, contact elected officials, conduct surveys, present to their peers, and create original artwork, flyers, and videos to amplify their impact.

September is ! At Homeward NYC, healthy aging means nurturing connection, creative expression, and overall well-being for our senior residents. 👵👴✨

For years, The Mom Squad—a wonderful group of Upper West Side moms and friends—has brought joy and connection to Homeward NYC’s intergenerational residence through regular gatherings with our seniors and young families.

One beloved tradition is Soup & Songs, where seniors gather for dinner, good conversation, and music. Sometimes the entertainment comes from right within the community—like Daniel, who has been a Soup & Songs regular since 2019, bringing his old-school boombox and cassette tapes to share classic tunes.

From birthdays and holidays to Breakfast & Bingo, movie outings, dance classes, health workshops, and more, these activities help build connection, support well-being, and create a true sense of community.

Thank you, Daniel and The Mom Squad, for helping make Homeward NYC a place where neighbors become community. ❤️
