Homeward NYC Our mission is to provide housing and wraparound services that empower homeless young mothers, LGBTQ young people and older adults to live life forward.

We began in 1989 with an Upper West Side mixed-age residence that is a transitional family shelter for homeless mothers and their children and long-term, affordable housing for low-income and homeless seniors. In 2011, we created a first of its kind LGBTQ young adult supportive housing site in West Harlem. In 2015 we opened a Bronx LGBTQ site. In 2020, we reorganized West End Residences and our Tr

This Pride Month, you can help create a soft landing and a bright future for the LGBTQIA+ young adults who call Homeward NYC home. 🌸

The young adults (ages 18 to 25) who step through our doors often have carried heavy burdens from aging out of foster care to navigating the deep heartbreak of family rejection and trauma. At Homeward NYC, we believe every young person deserves a space where they can finally take a deep breath. We provide more than just a roof; we offer a warm, affirming community where they can heal, build life skills, and grow at their own pace.

One of our former residents recently shared what having this safe harbor meant to her before she moved out to her own more independent apartment:

"It was comfortable and a cozy space. And I guess there was a safety part about it too, with the security. It made me feel like I was safe. I grew a lot. I learned to manage my money... saving. It was a great starter as far as my first place. They work with the people there."

Homeward NYC’s housing and onsite services for homeless LGBTQIA young adults, young families and seniors meet essential needs. This is critical but just the first step. We believe Pride doesn’t stop at surviving. It’s also about thriving.

The 2026 theme is "Champion Your Health," a call to action that resonates deeply with our mission at Homeward NYC. For the 40 seniors calling our Upper West Side site home, "championing health" starts with the security of a safe, affordable place to live.

Aging in place with dignity should be a right, not a privilege. By providing stable housing and trauma-informed support, we empower our older residents to:
✅ Access preventative care and wellness resources.
✅ Build social connections that combat isolation and depression.
✅ Foster intergenerational bonds with the young families in our mixed-age housing.

This Mother’s Day, make a gift in honor of resilient young mothers.

The homeless mothers who live at Homeward NYC’s family shelter are ages 18 to 24 with an average child age of 28 months. Their typical stay living in their transitional family shelter apartment is six to nine months. These young women are just starting adulthood—and doing so as parents. Homeward NYC supports and empowers them as individuals, young parents, and heads of household so they’re successful when they move to permanent housing.

Says one young mother (she and her son have since moved to permanent housing): “I went to every session—mommy and baby classes, business classes, CPR training, parenting, resume writing, job fairs… I didn’t want to miss anything.”
