The Stonewall Uprising was a turning point in the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.
In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village. At the time, raids on LGBTQ+ establishments were common, and LGBTQ+ people routinely faced discrimination, harassment, and arrest simply for who they were or how they expressed themselves.
That night was different. Rather than quietly dispersing, patrons and neighborhood residents resisted the raid. The confrontation grew into several days of demonstrations and clashes with police. While no single person or event created the LGBTQ+ rights movement, the Stonewall Uprising was the genesis for today’s current Pride Parade.
One year later, on June 28, 1970, activists organized the Christopher Street Liberation Day March in New York City to commemorate the uprising.
