I am still blown away by the incredible work and dedication from each and every person at Dancing Classrooms. Mad Hot Ball is a night filled with inspiration, joy, and, of course, lots of dancing.

We are grateful to the honorees, dancing pros, and all who attended to support Dancing Classroom to create a more equitable, just, and joyful world by dancing together.

(It’s worth the swipe)

Little did I know how much my life would change when I first walked into a Fred Astaire in Buffalo. Not only did I meet my forever person, teach some amazing students, travel the country, compete, and perform, but I also learned life skills that I’ve carried with me to this day.

That’s why I am beyond excited and honored to join the Board of Directors of Dancing Classrooms () which has been serving the NYC community for over 30 years.

Through the joyful art and practice of social dances, Dancing Classrooms cultivates engaged learners, collaborative leaders, and inclusive spaces. This renowned program develops the best of what academics call Social Emotional Learning or SEL, life skills like motivation, collaboration, and listening that help us develop into empathetic and compassionate human beings in a coarsening world.

Market Update - August 2024📈

* Year over year, the July median single-family-home sales price and the median condo/co-op price were up 4.2% and 2.7% respectively: Both declined slightly from all-time highs in June. Price reductions on active listings in July jumped 43% year-over-year.
Existing-home sales increased 3.5% from June and rose 4.6% from July 2023, but remained far below long-term norms.
* 20% of buyers waived their inspection contingency (vs. 26% last July), and 22% waived the appraisal contingency (unchanged). 15% of May-July contracts saw delays in scheduled close of escrow (vs. 14%), and 6% of contracts were terminated before close of escrow (unchanged).

Permits were sent to the city last week to construct an 18-story building at the site of the former home of Mermaid Inn’s Upper West Side location.

A group linked to the luxury condo developer Nortco Development submitted permits with the city on September 11 to a construct a new 215-foot tall building, which plans to have 37 mixed-use units, retail space on the ground floor, and a parking garage on the second floor, according to the permit.

When the Mermaid Inn closed, owners Danny Abrams and Cindy Smith ended the lease with the new owner due to uncertainty about the property’s future. Demolition permits were filed last summer for 568-574 Amsterdam Avenue. Recently, the first new-building permit was submitted, though it’s unclear if it covers all addresses. Nortco declined to comment and didn’t respond to media inquiries.

The new Upper West Side Mermaid Inn location is expected to open soon at 335 Columbus Avenue, at the corner of West 76th Street. Abrams told the Rag in June that he anticipated the new outpost to open in the middle to end of August, but the doors remain unopened as of September 17.
