— The Ground Lease Coop Coalition
Dear Senator Brian Kavanagh,
I hope this letter finds you well.
I recently became aware of legislation introduced in the state Senate and Assembly that would protect residents of ground lease co-ops (S.7825/A.5031-A). This measure is sponsored by Senator Liz Kreuger and Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal.
I write to seek your support and request that you consider adding your name to the bill as a co-sponsor.
In less than a year, some ground lease terms will expire. Co-op sales are stagnant because buyers are unable to attain 30-year mortgages under the current ground lease financing system. Residents are concerned they may lose their life savings, and homes - without a Ground Lease Co-op Bill of Rights.
This bill would protect more than 25,000 New Yorkers and their families who are part of the Ground Lease Coop Coalition. It is crucial that this proposal be voted on during the 2024 legislative session and become law.
New York is experiencing a housing crisis and renters, first-time home buyers, and co-op owners are vulnerable.
You have long supported our community, and we ask you to lend your voice to this urgent issue. Please join your colleagues and help us save the homes and livelihoods of ground lease co-op residents.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Agnes Goldberger
