Ikebana is more than just the art of flower arranging; it's a profound philosophical journey. The essence of its beauty lies in three main pillars: the harmonious asymmetry, the empty space (ma) that gives "breath" to each set and a soul-touching spiritual meaning. Unlike conventional bouquets that emphasize quantity and symmetry, Ikebana actually highlights the beauty of lines as well as a deep appreciation for nature. 🌿
Its main principle, Shin, Soe and Hikae, divides the elements into three pillars: Shin (symbol of heaven/highest element), Soe (human symbol/middle element), and HikaE (lower earth symbol). The beauty of the line takes centre stage, prioritising the richness of branches, stems and space, creating a contrast with the density and symmetry of ordinary flower arrangements. Ikebana's work also teaches about impermanence (Mujo), reminding us to contemplate the cycles of life and find beauty in fragility that lasts only a few days. ✨
In the assembly, make use of natural materials around you - composite flowers, leaves, dried twigs, even moss. Make sure each element has a different height to complement one another without overlapping. Just remember not to fill the vase; allow enough empty space for each element to breathe, creating an elegant and meaningful arrangement. 🌸
