As the door splintered inwards
She realized her error
She’d trapped herself inside
And that filled her with terror

There was no where to run
No where to hide
These were simple facts
Which could not be denied

She wished she could disappear
Sink right through the floor
Instead she stood transfixed
At what came through the door

The man with the gun
Was someone she knew
The father of her sons
With him she had two

The second bullet
Struck her in the side
And she ran down the hall
As she screamed and cried

The bullet then hit her
Right in the back
Still she crawled forward
Away from his attack

Somehow she opened
The bathroom door
Closed it and then crawled
Across the floor

The fourth bullet stuck her
While she was in the air
The 3rd story bathroom window
She’d leapt from there

In my trauma room
She laid on my table
This is her truth
It’s not a fable

And what I learned
From her that day
If you try you can survive anything
That comes your way.

They said it was easy
They never said it’d be hard
The never told you it could all change
On one flip of a card

They told you you’re wrong
Yet you knew you were right
You keep praying for peace
They keep telling you, fight

They want you to stay young
When you can’t help but age
They tease and incite you
Then tell you to swallow your rage

They want you to believe
In their distortion of facts
To forget all your questions
And never to ask

They want you to jump
No matter what they say
Don’t look at the landing
Or the fact you can’t walk away

They want you to keep quiet
To hold it all in
They don’t want to hear our voices
Just to quiet the din

They want you to follow blindly
No matter where they lead
And that is the tragedy
Of being motivated by power and greed.

Remembering Edgar Allan Poe.

On January 19, 1809 the late writer, poet, editor, and literary critic Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism in the United States, and of American literature. He was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story, and considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre, as well as a significant contributor to the emerging genre of science fiction. Poe and his works influenced literature around the world, as well as specialized fields such as cosmology and cryptography. He and his work appear throughout popular culture in literature, music, films, and television. His notable short stories include "The Black Cat", “The Cask of Amontillado", “A Descent into the Maelström", “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar", “The Fall of the House of Usher", “The Gold-Bug", “Hop-Frog", “The Imp of the Perverse", “Ligeia", “The Masque of the Red Death", “Morella", “The Murders in the Rue Morgue", “Never Bet the Devil Your Head", “The Oval Portrait", “The Pit and the Pendulum", “The Premature Burial", “The Purloined Letter", “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether", “The Tell-Tale Heart", and “Loss of Breath". His notable poems include "Al Aaraaf", “Annabel Lee", “The Bells", “The City in the Sea", “The Conqueror Worm", “A Dream Within a Dream", “Eldorado", “Eulalie", “The Haunted Palace", “To Helen", “Lenore", “Tamerlane", “The Raven", and “Ulalume". Poe died in Baltimore, Maryland on October 7, 1849, at age 40, under mysterious circumstances. The cause of his death remains unknown, and has been variously attributed to many causes including disease, alcoholism, substance abuse, and su***de.
