JUST INπ¨: THE FLORIDA HOUSE VOTES TO END PROPERTY TAXES FOR HOMEOWNERS IN A HISTORIC 80-30 VOTE.
Florida just made history. Or at least half of it.
The Florida House passed HJR 203 in an 80-30 vote, which would exempt homesteaded properties from all non-school property taxes beginning January 2027. Every Republican voted yes. Every Democrat voted no.
House Speaker Daniel Perez called it "the most aggressive legislation ever passed by a legislative chamber on property taxes in the history of the United States."
Hard to argue with that framing. But here's where it gets complicated.
The Senate never acted on it. The bill died in committee on March 13, 2026. A special session starting April 20 is now the last possible path to getting this on the November ballot.
And even if the Senate passes it, Florida voters would still need to approve it by a 60% supermajority.
Economists estimate Florida's sales tax would need to jump from 6% to roughly 11-12% to replace the lost homestead property tax revenue. That money funds local police, fire departments, and first responders. So the savings on one bill could quietly show up on another.
This isn't done. It isn't law. But if it eventually passes, Florida becomes the first state in American history to eliminate property taxes for homeowners.
Worth watching very closely.
