🌳 HOW GRAMERCY PARK WAS SAVED 🌳

Gramercy Park didn't stay Gramercy Park by accident.

📜 1831 — Samuel Ruggles built preservation into the park's legal DNA, setting aside 42 lots as an "ornamental private Square" for surrounding owners. Older than any landmarks law — written straight into the ground.

🏛️ 1912 — When the City threatened to cut a street through the Park for the Lexington Ave subway, neighbors organized, formed the Gramercy Park Association, and stopped it. Four years later they helped win residential zoning for the blocks around the Park.

🏙️ 1966 — This Sunday marks 60 YEARS since NYC designated the Gramercy Park Historic District — one of the city's earliest. Four hundred members showed up to support it. Nobody spoke against it.

Today, the Landmarks Preservation Commission protects the District. The Trustees steward the Park itself. And the Gramercy Park Block Association carries the civic torch — keeping neighbors informed, advocating for preservation, and caring for the streets around the Park.

Nearly two centuries of neighbors protecting a remarkable place. 💚
