EIRTIE – Smart Cities in Egypt.

Over the years, the world has witnessed the evolution of cities both technologically and environmentally. These cities came to be known as smart cities with examples of New York, London, Singapore and many more. But you might be asking, what is a smart city? A smart city is an urban city that uses different types of electronics and sensors to collect data. Then, the insights gained from that data are used to manage assets, resources and services efficiently to improve the operations across the city.

In this regard, we are proud that Egypt is currently constructing its first smart city that is the New Administrative Capital.
However, that does not mean that it will be the only smart city in Egypt. In fact, the government wants to conduct 50 smart cities nationwide by 2050, under the vision of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi. Actually, since 2018, Egypt has begun constructing 22 fourth-generation cities.

The whole idea of smart cities is built around the Internet of Things (IoT), an interconnected network of devices that collect, store, and share data while communicating with each other to improve its effectiveness. This can come in the shape of monitoring transportation and traffic, water and power supplies and other forms of supervision.

A sustainable city is a city designed with consideration for social, environmental and economic impact. Smart cities are not always sustainable, since the majority of initiatives are aimed at finding cost efficiencies within existing systems; without having the sustainable development goals in mind. However, those that are being constructed in the country, all are sustainable.

An experiment conducted in Detroit, where high-definition cameras that are connected directly to the police headquarters, resulted in a 23% reduction in the crime rate. Honeywell, an international technology-building company, will do the same thing by installing over 6,000 wireless cameras all over New Administrative Capital; which would allow the government to track crime and monitor any suspicious behavior instantly.

Besides security, the transportation there is looking pretty solid too. Siemens is set to build EGP 360bn high-speed rail network spanning over 1,000 KM. ‘’The new 21-station monorail network system will link the coasts of the Red and Mediterranean seas, all the way through the New Administrative Capital and other major cities’’, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi said in a Presidency statement.

New Smart Cities other than New Administrative Capital in Egypt are set to be:
· New Alamein City: President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi initiated the first phase of the New Alamein City on 1st of March 2018 in Marsa Matrouh governorate. The city is set on an area of 48,000 acres and is designed to include 5,000 housing. The first phase will include the establishment of a sustainable smart city. New El Alamein City will include a national university with a number of applied science faculties, an opera house, a library and a museum.

· New 6th of October City: The first phase of the city spans over an area of 78,000 acres. It’s one of the new fourth-generation cities with residential projects, a wholesale market, a dry port and a whole city dedicated for craftsmen.

· New Mansoura City: Being built under the supervision of the Egyptian government with an area of 5,104 acres, its first phase is already accomplished and built on 2,063 acres. The first phase of New Mansoura City includes multiple projects, such as Sakan Masr with 4,704 units, Dar Masr with 11,000 units and a water desalination system. Construction works are still going, with 20% of Sakan Masr units already accomplished.

To sum it all up, Egypt is currently set into a new revolution but this time its against the old school structures.
