We are thrilled to share that Sendero Verde has been honored with a Urban Land Institute award for Excellence in Affordable Housing Development.

Located in East Harlem, Sendero Verde is one of the most ambitious affordable housing projects in New York City’s recent history. As the largest affordable Passive House residential building in the world, it combines deeply sustainable design with a robust mix of affordable housing, community-focused programming, and generous public green space. The project proves that large-scale affordable housing can be designed to meet the world’s most rigorous sustainability standards—without compromising on quality, comfort, or community.

Last week, Jonathan Rose Companies was proud to join Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation, Brooks + Scarpa, TINA CHEE LANDSCAPE STUDIO | CHEE SALETTE, Morley Builders, WinnCompanies, representatives from Los Angeles Council District 1, and members of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the completion of 1999 – a new all-electric, affordable housing development in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles.

1999 is a seven-story, 137-unit residential building that features 10,000 square feet of open space, community spaces for fitness, yoga, community gatherings, and bike parking – situated in a transit-rich location. 1999 is also registered under LEED v4 Homes Multifamily Midrise and is targeting LEED Gold Certification.

As Los Angeles continues to face a severe housing shortage and remains particularly vulnerable to the effects of an increasingly volatile climate, the completion of 1999 will help to alleviate housing stress for families while the building itself serves as a physical model of what a future without fossil fuels can look like in California.

We want to give a special thanks to everyone who contributed to 1999’s success and we are excited to see what the future holds for this community and greater Los Angeles.

Our Cleveland office celebrated Black History Month by highlighting two local political icons, brothers Carl and Louis Stokes, through a special photographic exhibition at the Western Reserve Historical Society.

The Stokes brothers were born to parents who migrated from Georgia to Cleveland during the Great Migration of African-Americans to the northern states. After their father's early death, they were raised by their mother in public housing. Both brothers attended law school and started a practice together before venturing into politics.

Carl, the younger brother, was the first to enter political office, becoming the mayor of Cleveland in 1965. He was the city's first black mayor and the first African-American mayor of a major American city. During his tenure, he established a public-private partnership to revitalize Cleveland neighborhoods and was an early advocate for environmentalism, working to clean up the Cuyahoga River. Meanwhile, his brother Louis was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1968, serving for 30 years. He was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, chaired the House Ethics Committee, and helped secure funding for veterans' healthcare in Cleveland. The brothers remained close, with Louis recalling their daily political discussions. Louis retired after Carl's death, feeling that much of the "fun" had left politics.

Afterwards, our colleagues dined at Zanzibar Soul Fusion, a black-owned restaurant, where we enjoyed a variety of Southern-inspired cuisine.

The “Rose Serves” program gives our teams the opportunity to volunteer, to give back to the communities we operate in, providing their time to mission-aligned causes that benefit historically underserved communities.

This year, our focus has been on Food Security. Our teams had the privilege of working with two key partners: the New York Common Pantry and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. These organizations help provide fresh, healthy food to individuals in need, and our volunteers were honored to support their efforts.

Sendero Verde , Spanish for "green path," is a state-of-the-art development in New York City that's an answer to two big problems: the need for affordable housing, and our planet's overheating.

Sendero Verde, a center of low- and mixed-income housing, is using passive building principles to reduce its energy costs.

On Tuesday (6/18) Jonathan Rose Companies, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Chicago Department of Housing, Chicago Housing Authority and the BJW Tenant Council celebrated the Ribbon Cutting / Renovation of Barbara Jean Wright Court Apartments!

Barbara Jean Wright Court Apartments, is a 272-unit family mixed-income community. The $47 Million Renovation includes a newly constructed 5,000 square foot community clubhouse plus the renovation of all units that feature quality-of-life improvements for residents like upgraded unit interiors, all new bathrooms and kitchens, new landscaping and a new playground. The renovation also addressed all deferred maintenance, with a focus on energy efficiency updates, including new windows, new heating and cooling, new lighting, new roofs and insulation. The property expects to receive Enterprise Green Communities certification before the end of the year.

The renovation of BJ Wright Court Apartments preserves and rehabilitates critical housing near downtown Chicago, close to some of the best schools in the area. The project included the ground-up construction of a 5,000 square foot community clubhouse that features a leasing office, conference rooms, computer lab, fitness center, classroom and a multipurpose room with a full-service kitchen and recording studio. The multipurpose room is sized as a half-court gymnasium and will serve as a new hub for community activity and connection.

Jonathan Rose Companies worked with the City of Chicago, their Department of Housing and the local alderpersons, to identify $7.9 million in funding for the renovation. The U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development renewed the existing Section 8 Housing Assistance Payments contract for another 20 years and The Chicago Housing Authority committed over 100 new Project-Based Vouchers and Housing Choice Vouchers for existing and new residents at the project. Rose also worked with the local utility providers to secure rebate funding for additional greening measures and insulation.
