The city is taking a first step toward reimagining one of New Yorkβs most familiar streetscape fixtures.
While these structures play an important role in protecting pedestrians during façade repairs and construction, they can also impact curb appeal, retail visibility, and first impressions of a building.
The city has now unveiled the first prototypes of redesigned sidewalk sheds, featuring more open layouts, increased natural light, and improved pedestrian circulation. The new concepts are intended to maintain safety requirements while creating a more attractive streetscape experience.
The installations will remain on display for 30 days as the city evaluates six new concepts that could eventually be used at construction and façade repair sites across all five boroughs.
