Did you know?
Minetta Tavern was established in 1937, replacing another establishment that was closed for eight years called The Black Rabbit. It was founded by Eddie Silieri but is later known as Eddie Minetta, taken from the name of the tavern. Today, it is run by Keith McNally, which he preserves the original wooden look of the bar that was primarily installed in 1931.
The name originates centuries ago from a brook that ran through the area called the "Mannette," which means "Devil's Water" by the Native Americans. The name was later on altered through time and acculturation, which altered the name into "Minetta," but the original meaning was preserved which provides cultural background for the tavern.
It became a popular hangout place for many literary legends, such as Joe Gould, Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, etc. It also became a hotspot for the poets called "The Ravens".
