Weird HOA restrictions that actually exist in New Jersey 👀
Here’s what I found out after moving from New York to Monmouth County, New Jersey…
Some of these HOA rules surprised me more than the snow!
1. You may get a violation notice if your holiday decorations stay up too long after the season ends.
2. There are designated days and times when garbage and recycling cans can be placed at the curb.
3. Certain dog breeds may be restricted.
4. No overnight street parking.
5. House numbers, mailboxes, and even exterior light fixtures may have to match community standards.
6. You may need approval to plant trees, shrubs, or even change your landscaping.
7. Most communities require an application and board approval before you can purchase a home.
8. Work trucks, commercial vans, or vehicles with business logos may not be allowed to park in driveways.
9. Some communities require garage doors to remain closed when not actively being used.
10. Installing a fence, shed, patio, or even changing your front door color often requires HOA approval first.
What do you think of these rules?
And honestly… I still choose to live in an HOA because there are benefits too. I like not seeing overgrown lawns, abandoned vehicles, or homes falling into disrepair. Plus, many communities help maintain property values and may cover landscaping, snow removal, exterior maintenance, and community amenities.
