We spoke up for New York City co-op condo and townhouse owners!!…….NYCity Council hosted a hearing of the finance committee to question the current administration on the botched rollout of the second Home Tax which has been disruptive, confusing and antagonistic to NYC homeowners. Not only the approximately 17,000 owners who received notices that they owe the tax with the burden on them to prove that it is actually their primary residence before Sept. 18th , but also the approximately 950,000 co-op, condo, and townhouse owners who were on a PUBLISHED, SEARCHABLE, SORTABLE spreadsheet indicating they “MIGHT BE AFFECTED” by the tax. This list shows NAMES, ADDRESSES and the DOF’s assessment of MARKET VALUE , a “haves versus have nots” list, a “doxxing” targeting hard working New Yorkers for many of whom their home is their primary wealth building asset. …some research also indicates that many of the apartments and townhomes are significantly OVERVALUED, even by the DOF’s own method !!! For example , we sold a downtown condo that the city says would rent for $23,000 (this is how they calculate value) but comps reveal it would rent for more like $$17,000 which is 35% higher! This flows through to the valuation on which the tax is based. …. Significant expense hiring a lawyer, appraiser and tax accountant to document this and challenge the DOF while the tax clock started running on Jan 5 2026 and first payment due January 2027…..Good luck! NO ONE from the administration attended, showing little respect for the Council or home owners …... We showed up and the City Council heard us….MORE TO COME !
