South Street Seaport holds it's Neighborhood Eats Tour: New York Waterfront. On this three-and-a-half-hour tour, you’ll ride a New York Water Taxi to the storm-affected neighborhoods of Red Hook, Dumbo and the South Street Seaport, visiting establishments that are still recovering from the damage (such as the historic Paris Café), as well as those that have already mended (like the recently reopened wine bar BIN No. 220). On the way through the Seaport, enjoy snacks from a rotating list of vendors and restaurants, which may include Brooklyn Oyster Party, Landhaus, Fresh Salt and Runner & Stone. Then take a harbor cruise to Brooklyn, sailing by Lady Liberty en route. A portion of the price benefits Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts. Meet at 19 Fulton St at Front St. Subway: 2, 3 to Fulton St. Until Sun Dec 22. Get tickets at: http://www.urbanoyster.com/neighborhood-eats-tour---new-york-waterfront.html

NYC’s 40th Anniversary Village Halloween Parade Benefiting Sandy Volunteers. Hurricane Sandy put the kibosh on Greenwich Village’s annual Halloween procession last year, so we're all looking forward to it making a triumphant return for its 40th anniversary on Thursday October 31st. This year's theme is REVIVAL and the parade will honor New Yorkers who stepped up to help the community after Superstorm Sandy rocked our world. They'll be joined by the awe-inspiring puppets created by Superior Concept Monsters, the Madagascar Institute, the Puppeteers’ Cooperative and Basil Twist’s studio, among others, as well as the Hungry March Band, the On the Lam Band and 35 more musical troupes. Sign up via http://halloween-nyc.com/ now to volunteer to be a puppeteer or a performer in the procession; to walk in the parade, just turn up in a really good costume. Sixth Ave from Spring St to 16th St.

"Kiku: The Art of the Japanese Garden" at the New York Botanical Garden: We New Yorkers are singularly focused on leaves this time of year, but in Japan, fall is chrysanthemum-appreciation season. Gawk at multicolored blossoms trained to grow into a bridge, cascade or wall formation at this three-week display, and single stems that have been manipulated to produce hundreds of flowers at once. This is the closing weekend and features a special bonsai exhibit (Oct 26, 27) and poetry reading with Jane Hirschfield (Oct 27 at 2pm); throughout the month you can also catch traditional Japanese taiko drumming (Sat, Sun 1, 3pm) and sip sake at a pop-up restaurant (Fri–Sun). Get Tickets at: http://www.nybg.org/exhibitions/2013/kiku/

Autumn’s splendor comes to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory with an exhibition highlighting the beauty of Japan's fall-flowering chrysanthemums.

President Obama is coming to Brooklyn today! The president plans to visit Crown Heights’ P-Tech high school, which he’s lauded as an educational model, today. Big news, folks: Our very own president is landing in Brooklyn today. Barack Obama plans to visit Pathways in Technology Early College High School (a.k.a. P-Tech) in Crown Heights at the end of the week. He dropped the two-year-old school's name in a couple of speeches, mentioning it as part of his administration's push to expand New York's tech industry, and name-checking it as a great example of a vocational high school. P-Tech is a six-year technical school with a computer-science focus that covers grades 9 through 14. The prez is supposedly just stopping by to say what's up and meet some students, but we can always hope they'll build a robot together. One thing is for sure, though: Traffic is gonna be effed up. Inside sources tell us that Prospect Park (yes, the whole thing) will be closed from noon through 6pm today to accommodate President Obama's arrival. Check out awesome photos of Marine helicopters practicing landing in the Kings County park via Park Slope Stoop: http://bit.ly/H2ymgj, and go to http://www.prospectpark.org/home for the Prospect Park Alliance's official statement.

We heard from the city earlier today to expect a helicopter landing in Prospect Park [...]

World Trade Center's Underground Passageway is now open as of yesterday. Pedestrians trying to cross the busy West Side Highway near the World Trade Center are now able to make their way underground. The long-anticipated World Trade Center west concourse, an underground walkway linking the WTC site with Brookfield Place at Vesey Street, opened yesterday, the Port Authority announced Tuesday. The passageway connects the WTC PATH station, which has an entrance at West Broadway and Vesey Street, with the new glass-enclosed Brookfield Place Pavilion across West Street, which is also open for the first time. The 8,000-square-foot pavilion, supported by two massive steel lattice towers, has six escalators leading to the underground passage, along with revolving doors opening to West Street. Step into ‘The Universe of Keith Haring’ tonight at 7pm at the New York Historical Society’s screening of an enthralling documentary that profiles one of Pop Art's most influential artists. Haring created some of the most popular and enduring images of late 20th-century art and was also an iconic figure of the downtown New York scene in the '80s. His extensive body of work—ranging from paintings to sculpture to subway murals—can still be seen worldwide and around NYC (like the ‘Crack is Wack’ mural along the FDR Drive in East Harlem). Tonight’s event includes a free gallery visit to ‘AIDS in New York: The First Five Years’ from 6-7pm and get 10% off Keith Haring gifts in the museum store from 5:30-7pm. RSVP to [email protected]. http://nyhistory.org/

The New-York Historical Society has a mission to explore the history of New York and the nation through art and history exhibitions and public programs.
