New York City in the 90s! has me thinking about my fair city back when I first moved here--and specifically going out to restaurants. Yes the food was delish but it was about the people, the energy, the party! In a pre mobile phone world, the element of surprise was real--you never knew who was going to be out or what was going to happen! Yes I read the Tables for Two column in the New Yorker faithfully and checked out the Dining section in the New York Times but mostly I just heard about where to go from friends, work colleagues, strangers on the trains, dance partners at the club. I didn't go down the deep google dive of making sure I would have a perfect experience and some of the most memorable nights were very chaotic and full of friction. A Friday night was an invitation to roll the dice. Of course we had our mainstays--some that are still here for beers + grilled cheese, for sexy dinners , Coffee Shop (Rip!) for lunch and for 3 am French fries after dancing. I go back to many of these places still not for the experience today but to get into a time machine for the memory of a pre 9/11 New York, an innocent and creative time when I was forming into the New Yorker I am today! Tell me in the comments which restaurants you loved and also still love from the 90s! 🎥 credit:

I love that I'm finally old enough to be nostalgic! New York City in the 90s was a wild time and I joined the party in 1997! No smart phones, no social media, just me in my 20s making mistakes and having a lot of fun along the way without it being documented.

Let me know in the comments what you'd like for me to talk about NYC in the 90s!

As Black History month comes to a close I wanted to honor the tremendous contribution the Harlem Renaissance gave not only to America but to the world. As I get older I find myself turning to poetry more + more for deeper understanding, comfort and joy. In 2020 I started reading poetry aloud to Mouse (he was a good audience as it turns out!) and to friends via voice notes. Langston Hughes was one of those poets in my rotation. To be clear he was not just a poet, but an activist, a playwright, a novelist and a journalist. He is credited as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance, which served as a foundation for the community needed for the Civil Rights movement. Understanding other persons' experiences is a big part of our responsibility of being American even if there is a lot of noise to the contrary. I am proud to be an American and a New Yorker. Happy Black History month! Who is your favorite black writer or artist? 🎥 credit:

I am proud to announce that 2026 is Sumi's Year of Getting Dressed! At first blush that may seem whimsical and just fun but I assure you nothing is more political than a woman over 50 getting dressed. Bare arms, long hair, a shorter hem line--all of these choices are laid bare for judgement. This year is about rising above judgement and embracing self expression and joy! Happy new year! 📸: ()
