The third date with Susan was supposed to be the charm. I'd met her on Tinder — charming, witty, gorgeous. After two nice dinners and a park stroll, I thought this was heading somewhere and picked a cozy Italian restaurant.

But, as the waiter placed the breadbasket on our table, the door swung open with a gust of air. There she was — Linda, my colleague, with her three kids in tow, ages 2, 8, and 12.

"Hi, sweetheart," Linda said, sliding beside me. Her toddler clung to her hip while the older two squeezed onto Susan's side of the table as if it were theirs.

"Linda, what are you doing here?" I stammered.

"Oh, don't be silly," she said, placing a hand on mine. "You promised to watch the kids tonight, and here you are having dinner with her?" She gestured at Susan, who looked ready to explode.

"Excuse me?" Susan hissed.

"WE'RE A FAMILY," Linda said, motioning to her kids, now happily picking at our breadsticks. "YOU CAN'T JUST ABANDON US LIKE THIS. THEY WERE SO EXCITED TO SEE YOU TONIGHT!"

"Linda, what the hell are you doing?" I whispered, my face burning.

Susan had enough. She grabbed her purse. "You two clearly have... unfinished business," she snapped, storming out.

I turned to Linda, voice shaking. "YOU JUST RUINED MY DATE!"

She didn't flinch, leaning back as her toddler munched a breadstick. "YOU SHOULD THANK ME."

My ex-wife passed away while I was on a business trip. As soon as I heard the news, I rushed to her city for the funeral. My current wife, Candace, also traveled there with my daughter and stepdaughters, booking hotel rooms while waiting for me.

That night, I called my daughter to check on her. She was crying, and at first, I thought it was grief. But then she told me her stepsisters had taken the bed, leaving her to sleep on the floor. I was speechless.

I still remember the night I found him—a tiny bundle wrapped in a worn-out blanket, left in a basket near my fire station. It was my shift, and the cold wind howled as if mourning the little soul abandoned to fate.

He was barely a week old, his cries weak but determined. My partner, Joe, and I exchanged glances, unspoken words passing between us.

"We'll call CPS," Joe said, his voice steady. But I couldn't shake the feeling that this baby was meant for something more… or maybe just meant for me.

Months passed, and when no one came forward to claim him, I filed for adoption. I named him Leo because he roared through every challenge, just like a little lion.

Being a single dad wasn't easy, but Leo made it worth every sleepless night and every ounce of spilled spaghetti sauce on the carpet. He was my son in every way that mattered.
