🏆 ✨We are very excited to announce that two of our projects – El Teatro at El Museo del Barrio, in Manhattan, and Artists in Residence – A Home for Traveling Performers, in Brooklyn, were both recognized by the California Society of Registered Architects with Awards of Merit. Not that recognition is ever the goal, but it certainly feels good when it arrives. Thank you all for the continued support! 🙏

One of the advantages of custom residential design is the creativity it affords to shape a home around how people actually live—and the specific needs they have.

In this Upper West Side apartment renovation for example, we reconfigured the existing three-bedroom layout to carve out a dedicated study area—transforming what was once part of the living room into a quiet, flexible retreat. Designed in collaboration with interior designer Tami Wassong ( ), the space now serves multiple purposes: a place to read and work, a cozy area for children to wind down or self-regulate, and a comfortable guest room with an integrated sofa bed for guests.

This is just one small but meaningful example of how thoughtful planning can unlock new uses within an existing footprint—creating spaces that feel both intentional and deeply personal.

We’re excited to continue our ongoing work in Riverside Park—where New York’s architectural and social history are deeply intertwined.

In the late 19th century, the Upper West Side was still a retreat for the city’s wealthy, dotted with mansions and summer homes overlooking the Hudson. With the arrival of the subway and landmark developments like The Dakota in 1884, the neighborhood quickly transformed into the dense residential district it is today. Many of the buildings lining Riverside Drive began as hotels and apartment houses, evolving alongside the park, which was largely constructed in the 1870s and 1880s to create a public space along the Hudson River’s edge for a rapidly growing community.

Over the past three years, we’ve been proud to work with the Riverside Park Conservancy and NYC Parks on a series of pro bono improvements to the park’s public amenities. Our work began at the Dinosaur Playground on West 89th Street and Riverside Drive, where we developed a concept design for renovating a historic bathroom.

Through that process, we were asked to take on a second site—River Run Playground on West 83rd Street and Riverside Drive—where we are developing interior concepts for another pavilion. Being entrusted with a second project is especially meaningful, and reinforces our commitment to the thoughtful stewardship of New York City’s historic spaces.

We’re very proud to be serving as architectural consultants for the Quaker House, one of the 20 townhouses that surround the historic Turtle Bay Gardens.

Set mid-block and hidden from the street, Turtle Bay Gardens is a shared private garden enclosed by a row of 19th-century townhouses—an unexpected, almost suburban oasis in the heart of the city. For over a century, residents have quietly shared this green space, creating a rare, backyard-style community in Midtown Manhattan.

Turtle Bay Gardens has long attracted notable figures, including Katharine Hepburn, Bob Dylan, and Stephen Sondheim, all of whom lived in the properties surrounding the gardens. E.B. White the famed author of Charlotte’s Web was also a notable resident in the past. In fact, legend has it that his famous children’s story Stuart LIttle, was set in the garden area directly behind the Quaker House.

We love that our work often leads us to places layered with interesting histories and characters. We’re grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing stewardship of Turtle Bay Gardens: a fascinating corner of the city that most New Yorkers pass by without ever realizing it’s there.

We’re pleased to share that we’ve been retained by the board of The Eldorado, the iconic landmark on Central Park West, to serve as architectural consultants.

Completed in 1931 and designed by Emery Roth, the Eldorado is one of New York City’s most celebrated Art Deco towers. Its twin spires are among the most recognizable features of the Central Park skyline, and for nearly a century the building has been home to artists, writers, and cultural figures who have shaped the city’s creative life.

As architects who care deeply about New York’s historic buildings, it is a privilege to contribute to the continued stewardship of such an extraordinary place.

Some news to share: our founder, David Katz, is now licensed to practice architecture in Illinois.

For Katz Architecture, this opens the door to Chicago. Our New York practice has been built around the renovation, restoration, and preservation of historic masonry buildings—working across exterior envelopes and interior spaces, and navigating the technical complexities that come with landmark properties.

We’re excited to bring that experience to Chicago’s extraordinary building stock.

More to come.

Celebratory things are happening in the West Village 🎉

We’re in the final stages of completing work at the Stephan Weiss Studio—an adaptive reuse project transforming a former art-goods manufacturing space into a new event venue at the Urban Zen headquarters.

A longtime client of more than 15 years, Urban Zen invited us to help guide a complex renovation that included assembling the project team, reworking the plan, modernizing building systems, introducing a new elevator, and completing a long-anticipated zoning conversion.

Designed to host exhibitions, weddings, and large-scale gatherings of up to 300 guests, the project is anchored by a dramatic 22-foot-tall multi-use hall, complemented by a fully equipped commercial kitchen and a serene rooftop garden.

Final details are coming together now—just in time for your next high-profile soirée.

One of New York City’s more recognizable buildings, this pagoda-inspired structure on Canal Street was built in 1983 as the headquarters of the Golden Pacific National Bank. Located at the corner of Canal and Centre Streets in Chinatown, the bright red commercial building is defined by its dramatically tiered, sloping roofs and ornamented balconies. Unlike earlier stylized buildings in the neighborhood, where historic imagery was often applied to the surface, this building integrates its ornament directly into the structure itself. We have been retained by the owners to provide code consulting expertise and assistance with interior architectural modifications.

In New York City, real estate value is measured in location, light, and views. While we can’t do much about the first, improving the other two is very much our focus.

For this penthouse project on Central Park West, in collaboration with designer/friend Jonathan Parisen, we reconfigured a bedroom and transformed a modest opening into French doors—flooding the space with natural light and opening up sweeping views of the Upper West Side.

Scroll through to see the process. Final photos of the full transformation coming soon.
