Fifth Avenue was blue and white this weekend for the Greek Independence Day Parade.
I always like seeing this part of New York come alive. Families, kids, grandparents, flags, music, people running into friends they have not seen in a while. It is one of those days that feels very local, even in the middle of Manhattan.
For anyone who has never been, the parade usually runs along the Fifth Avenue and brings together Greek communities from all over New York, especially Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island, and New Jersey. Astoria is always well represented, of course.
And here is the useful tip for next year: if you are going with kids, get there a little early, bring snacks, and do not assume you will grab a cab right after. Fifth Avenue gets packed, side streets close, and the subway is usually the easier move.
Nice to see so much pride, history, and community out in the open.
