Tucked away on the Croatian island of Hvar — an island now known for glamorous clubs and luxury yachts — lies the forgotten village of Malo Grablje. Covering less than one square mile of rugged hillside above the Adriatic Sea, this once-thriving settlement dates back to the 14th century and was built on the cultivation of olive oil, wine, and lavender.

For centuries, the residents — all of whom shared the same surname, Tudor — lived off the land, producing high-quality oils and wine. But in the early 20th century, agricultural blight devastated their olive trees and grapevines. Facing economic collapse, the townspeople migrated just south to the coastal village of Milna, investing their remaining resources into fishing and tourism.

By the 1960s, Malo Grablje had been almost entirely abandoned, and as of the 2011 census, there were zero registered residents. Today, vines and time have overtaken the stone buildings, many of which still stand, weathered but resilient. The olive press room, complete with a massive stone press, and the church of Saint Tudor remain among the best preserved. Scattered throughout the village, rusted farm tools and overgrown machinery tell the story of a way of life long gone.

A particularly fascinating piece of folklore surrounds the village’s name. Legend claims that Malo Grablje was founded by an illegitimate son of King Henry VIII, who fled England and settled here — perhaps explaining the unusual presence of the Tudor surname in this remote Croatian enclave. While no historical evidence supports the tale, it continues to intrigue visitors and locals alike.

Despite its abandonment, Malo Grablje is still remembered and honored. Each year, descendants from nearby Milna return to celebrate the feast of Saint Theodora outside the old church. A local family also runs a seasonal konoba (traditional tavern), keeping classic Dalmatian recipes alive in the heart of the ruins. In recent years, a few residents have returned to the greater Malo Grablje area, but the original stone village remains largely untouched — a haunting, beautiful reminder of the island’s agricultural roots.

The Douglas School House No. 3, located near Douglas, North Dakota, is a rare surviving example of an early 20th-century one-room schoolhouse. Built in the early 1900s, it reflects the wave of settlement driven by the Homestead Act of 1862, which granted land to immigrants and pioneers seeking a new start.

During this time, thousands of families — primarily Norwegians and Germans from Russia (modern-day Ukraine) — came to North Dakota, drawn by the promise of free land and opportunity. Under the Homestead Act, claimants received 160 acres of public land if they:
1. Were adult heads of households
2. Lived on and cultivated the land
3. Built a home and paid a small registration fee
4. Became U.S. citizens

By 1908, homesteading reached its peak in North Dakota, with over 14,000 claims filed that year alone. By 1918, the vast majority of the state was settled.

This schoolhouse stands as a testament to the determination and spirit of those early settlers, a small but powerful reminder of the community, resilience, and pursuit of the American dream on the Northern Plains.
