What lies at the heart of our galaxy?

Our Solar System is located in the Orion Arm, about 26,000 light-years from the center of the Milky Way. At the galaxy’s core lies Sagittarius A*—a supermassive black hole with a mass of around 4.3 million Suns.

The journey toward the galactic center takes you through vast spiral arms, giant molecular clouds where new stars are born, and some of the most crowded regions in the Milky Way.

Even if you could travel at the speed of light, reaching the center would still take about 26,000 years. With today’s fastest spacecraft, the journey would take hundreds of millions of years.

Have you ever wondered how the Sun would look if you stood on another planet?
On Mercury, the closest planet, the Sun appears absolutely massive—about 1.35 degrees wide, nearly 2.5 times larger than it looks from Earth. The sky would be flooded with intense sunlight.

From Venus, it's still enormous at around 0.97 degrees. Even though Venus is covered in thick clouds, above them the Sun would look almost twice Earth's size.

On Earth, the Sun's average apparent size is about 0.53 degrees—the familiar disk we see every day.

Travel to Mars, and the Sun shrinks to just 0.35 degrees. It still shines brightly, but it looks noticeably smaller.

From Jupiter, it's only about 0.10 degrees across. At Saturn, it drops to 0.067 degrees—just a brilliant point of light.

On Uranus, the Sun measures only 0.032 degrees, and from Neptune, the most distant planet, it's a tiny 0.022-degree dot—around 24 times smaller in area than it appears from Earth.

The Sun never changes its actual size.

What changes is your distance from it. The farther you travel through the Solar System, the smaller our star appears—yet even from Neptune, it's still powerful enough to illuminate an entire world.
