That guitar you ordered online might be the reason learning feels so hard.

It arrives in a box, nobody checks it, and the action sits so high your fingers hurt before you've learned a chord. Most people quit and decide they just weren't musical.

Kim Dieterichs has watched it happen for years.

She's second generation at Bucks County Folk Music Shop in New Britain - the oldest continuously family-owned acoustic instrument store in the country. Karl and Jackie opened it in a farmhouse on South Sand Road in 1966, and Kim still checks and adjusts every instrument before it goes home with anyone.

What he credits instead is running to and from practice as a kid because his dad would not give him a ride. When he hires at Rhythm now, talent is the least important thing on the list.

Acres of brown, gray, and white, made for market share. Then you reach the handmade section. He calls it a bouquet of flowers in the abyss. Later in the same episode he puts it plainer: get off your phone and make something beautiful.

Will Mead ran Peace Valley Tile out of a shop in New Britain, PA. His tile is in the reflecting pool at Rittenhouse Square, in lamps at the White House, and in the Columbus Circle subway station.

He apprenticed at the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works in Doylestown before any of it. Ask him about it and he says he was fortunate.
