Tunnel. Down the Everest canal, under Veterans Parkway.

Cape Coral has the largest burrowing owl population in Florida — roughly a thousand nesting pairs, most of them on ordinary vacant lots. Those four white PVC stakes you see in the grass aren't decoration. They mark a protected burrow and a 33-foot buffer around it. WalletHub just ranked Cape Coral the 13th-best city in America to retire. Out of more than 180 cities.

The part I find more useful than the ranking: Cape Coral has the third-highest share of residents 65 and older in the country. Not a trend arriving — a trend that already arrived.

It scored 14th on affordability, 26th on quality of life, 82nd on health care. That last number is the honest one.

Around September 10 is the statistical peak of the Atlantic season — the middle of the busiest stretch, not the end of it. What that actually looks like here: people top off the propane, check the shutters they haven't touched since June, and stop leaving the boat on the lift over a long weekend. Nothing dramatic. What you check instead: zoning, utilities at the street, wetlands, and whether the lot sits in protected-species habitat. At $28,500 that homework still matters. It's the cheapest part of the deal.
