On September 21, 2026, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Senate Bill 373 into law. The governor’s office summarizes it this way: rental agreements must provide “at least one method of paying rent that does not impose an extra fee.”
The law doesn’t ban landlords from offering payment methods that charge fees altogether—a credit-card or online payment portal with a convenience fee. It means they can’t make every payment option fee-based. At least one option must be available without an additional charge.
The bill language specifically prohibits a lease from imposing an additional charge or fee on all allowed methods of rent payment.
