Nearly every tributary I walk along the Black Warrior River, I end up finding the remains of an old whiskey still, usually blown out and long abandoned.

From what I’ve gathered, a lot of these date back to the Prohibition era and even decades after, when moonshining was still common across rural Alabama. These creeks weren’t picked by accident, steady water, thick cover, and a quick way out if needed.

It’s a pretty fascinating piece of local history that’s easy to overlook.

If anyone has more insight on the timeline around here, or better yet, stories passed down about who was running these and when, I’d love to hear them.
