If backpacks, shoes, jackets, keys and mail somehow end up EVERYWHERE, you may not need everyone in the house to suddenly become more organized. 😂

You might just need a better place for everything to land.

And no, you don’t need a big beautiful mudroom to make it work!

A few hooks for backpacks and jackets, a basket for shoes and a designated spot for keys and mail can turn even a small entryway into a functional drop zone.

For busy families, individual hooks, baskets or cubbies can make it even easier for everyone to have a place for the things they use every day.

Organize your home around how your family ACTUALLY lives, not how you think your home is supposed to function.

If everybody comes through the garage door and drops their stuff there… that’s probably where the drop zone belongs. 😂

🐾 PET CORNER WITH SHELLEY 🐾

Does thunder turn your dog into a trembling, drooling mess?

Storm anxiety is very real for a lot of dogs, and over the years we’ve tried several different things with our own pets to help them feel calmer and safer.

Here are a few options that may help:

🐾 ThunderShirts: The gentle pressure can be comforting for some dogs.

🐾 Licky mats: These have helped Buddy in the past. Xylitol-free peanut butter, frozen bananas or simple dog-safe baby foods can work well. Always check the ingredients first.

🐾 Calming collars: Our cattle dogs have handmade collars with calming herbs such as chamomile and lavender. We’ll put the small-business link in the comments!

🐾 Calming sprays: Products like ThunderEase and Adaptil can be used on a bandana according to the directions. Let it dry completely and never spray it directly on your dog.

🐾 Prescription medication: For extreme anxiety, your veterinarian may recommend medication. Buddy has trazodone prescribed by his vet, and medication should always be used under veterinary guidance.

Most importantly, give them a safe place, stay close if they want you, and let them cope in whatever way makes them feel secure. Sometimes our calm presence is exactly what they need. ❤️

Fall is right around the corner here in Southeast Michigan, which makes September a good time to give your home a little attention before the colder months arrive.

And no, we’re not talking about a giant weekend project list. 😂

Sometimes taking care of your home is just a few small things:

🏡 Check or change your HVAC filter.
🔥 Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
🧺 Check the dryer vent and exterior exhaust.
🍂 Take a walk around outside and look at your gutters, downspouts, roofline and nearby branches.
❤️ Then do ONE thing simply because it makes your home feel good.

Bring out the fall blankets. Decorate the porch. Put up the wreath. Light the fall candle.

Because homeownership isn’t only about maintaining the house.

It’s also about creating a place you genuinely enjoy coming home to. ❤️

🐾 PET PARENT THURSDAY with Shelley

Apparently, Buddy has decided Shelley’s houseplants are now part of his diet. 😂🌱

And after years of having dogs, this is a first.

His plant of choice? The spider plant.

Thankfully, spider plants are considered non-toxic to both dogs and cats, so Buddy could have chosen a much worse snack. Still, Shelley would really prefer he stop treating it like his personal salad bar. 😂

Because not every houseplant is pet-friendly.

A few common ones pet parents should know about:

🪴 Pothos and philodendrons can cause mouth irritation, drooling, and vomiting.

🪴 Aloe can be toxic to dogs and cats.

🪴 Sago palm is extremely dangerous and can cause serious liver damage.

🌸 Certain true lilies are especially dangerous to cats and can cause severe kidney injury.

If your pet gets into a plant, try to identify the plant and contact your veterinarian or pet poison control right away. If you think the plant may be toxic, don’t wait for symptoms to appear.

Some of the most meaningful birthdays aren’t remembered because of the gifts…
they’re remembered because of the people who gathered around the table.

Home has a way of becoming the backdrop for life’s biggest moments, birthday dinners, candles being blown out, surprise parties, laughter that fills the room, and photos you’ll treasure for years to come.
