The Federal Reserve voted to keep interest rates unchanged at 3.5% to 3.75%, but the close 9 to 3 decision suggests that a rate increase could still be on the table when policymakers meet again in September. Inflation has cooled in recent months, the job market remains relatively stable, and officials are continuing to monitor factors such as oil prices, global events, tariffs, and the impact of artificial intelligence on the economy. For homebuyers, sellers, and homeowners, mortgage rates and borrowing costs will remain an important topic to watch as future decisions by the Fed could have a direct impact on the housing market.

In a 9-3 vote, the Fed policy committee chose patience in the face of elevated inflationary pressures, but the dissenting votes raise pressure for a rate hike in September.
