Did you know that long before Portland was a city, the area was home to thriving Indigenous communities?

The Multnomah tribe, a prominent group of Chinookan-speaking people, lived throughout the Portland basin and heavily populated Sauvie Island, which they called Wappatoo Island.

Here are a few quick facts about their rich history:
Plank Houses: They built permanent, beautiful cedar plank houses where multiple families lived together, especially during the cold winter months.
River Life: They navigated the Columbia and Willamette rivers in expertly carved canoes, fishing for salmon, sturgeon, and harvesting wapato roots.
Their Legacy: While disease outbreaks severely impacted their population in the 1830s, their descendants live on today as vital members of the Grand Ronde and Siletz federally recognized tribes.

the pages of the Impassable Wilderness directly into the Rose City.

In celebration of Portland author Colin Meloy’s novel Wildwood and the highly anticipated stop-motion film adaptation by our own LAIKA Studios, 30 giant crow sculptures have nested around town.

The trail brings the magical, hidden world of the book back into the real city that inspired it, featuring custom paint jobs by incredible Northwest artists—including the book's original illustrator, Carson Ellis!

You can find them lurking everywhere from downtown plazas to the actual Wildwood Trail in Forest Park.
Check them out, grab a map from the OHSU Foundation, and support a fantastic cause for Doernbecher Children's Hospital!
We have only seen about a third of them, but are excited to find the rest before the end of the month!

You don't have to wait. As soon as you find a ghost, you're welcome to turn it in right away.
