🏡 Portland Homeowners: Before You Pay That Property Tax Bill, Check the Color!

It's that time of year again! Property tax statements are arriving in mailboxes across the Portland metro area.

If you've opened yours and wondered, "Do I actually need to pay this?"—here's a helpful tip that could save you some confusion.

In Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas Counties, property tax statements are color-coded:

🟨 YELLOW STATEMENT = Your mortgage company pays your taxes.

If you have an escrow account, a portion of your monthly mortgage payment goes toward your property taxes. Your lender uses those funds to pay the county on your behalf.

That means you generally do NOT need to send a separate payment when your yellow statement arrives. Keep it for your records and confirm that your lender is handling the payment.

🟩 GREEN STATEMENT = You're responsible for paying your taxes directly.

If you receive a green statement, you'll need to make arrangements to pay the county yourself. Review the payment options and deadlines carefully.

Not sure how your property taxes are paid?

Take a look at your monthly mortgage statement for an escrow section, log into your mortgage account, or contact your loan servicer.

And remember, your property tax statement is worth reviewing even if your lender handles the payment. It's a great opportunity to see your assessed value, annual taxes, and any changes from last year.

The Portland Metro housing market showed signs of slowing last week, with new listings up 2.8%, pending sales down 2.1%, and statewide Sentrilock activity down 4.1%. Homes spent an average of 83 days on the market, a 29.7% increase, while the median sale price dropped 5.2% to $545,000 and the average rose 1.7% to $624,100.
