Sherman Avenue didn’t start out polished. It started rough, muddy, and full of grit.

Back in 1887, Coeur d’Alene was a town of about 40 people. Soldiers from Fort Sherman, loggers, miners, and railroad crews filled these streets long before tourists ever showed up with cameras and coffee cups.

Back then, Sherman Ave was lined with saloons, supply stores, sawmills, and a few characters that probably kept the sheriff busy. Steamboats rolled into the lakefront carrying visitors, and little by little, the tourism industry started taking shape.

Fast forward to today and that same street is the heartbeat of downtown CDA. Local shops, restaurants, parades, Ironman finish lines, street fairs—all with the lake sitting right there in the background.

That’s what makes this place special. It grew without losing its backbone.

North Idaho still feels real. And that’s getting harder to find these days.

North Idaho isn’t just pretty scenery. It’s history, hard work, and community.

The Blanchard Grange Hall has been standing since 1905. First schoolhouse in Spirit Valley. Church. Community center. Gathering place. Even reopened for students after a fire destroyed the newer school in 1958.

The Grange purchased it in 1959 for just $10 and kept it going ever since.

Places like this are why people fall in love with small-town North Idaho. Folks still gather. Still help each other. Still value community.

That’s getting harder to find these days.
