My manual can opener just went into the trash. 🗑️

I bought 2 large cans of baked beans at Ollie’s this week, for an easy protein option with no prep except opening the can. 🥫

And this is where life took a turn. 😏

I have an electric can opener. My arthritic hands & wrists often prevent me from using a manual. I love my electric, but there are times when a manual is a better option, like these bigger cans.

Well today I discovered that, not only has mine rusted, but also the cogs in the gears don’t line up properly. Turning the handle was just futile effort. 😩

So I got my pliers & tried to adjust the alignment. I got the cogs catching & turning the cutter…at first. Of course, that didn’t last long, so I adjusted again.

By now my hands are losing grip, & my wrists are shooting pains down my forearm, & I’m still not gaining much ground on accessing my beans. 🫘

Out come the pliers again, & I’m straining to bend the gears ⚙️ juuust enough, when off pops a plastic handle. 😤

Mind you, I’d just told myself this darn tool was in prime real estate when it only gets used less than once a month. I’d planned to tuck it in to an upper cabinet once the job was complete.

Now I’m frustrated, my hands & wrists are making me cringe with every turn, & I’m considering if using a hammer & knife to get my beans would be overkill. 🔪 🔨

I give it a couple more adjustments, bear down with just the effort needed to get the lid off without harming my body further, & finally! Pay dirt!

Maybe if I just do these adjustments every time… Why spend money on another when I only need… I could probably just…NO! I tell myself this is the LAST TIME! 🗑️

And so I’m sitting here on Walmart’s website looking for a new can opener.

How will I know if it’s a good one? How do I trust the reviews? Do I really want to spend that much? And did my “savings” by buying these giant cans (oh, crap, there’s a second one in the pantry that I’ll have to open someday soon 😫) really “save” me anything?

All I know is, I’m done fighting with cheap tools. I need one that works with my abilities, that meets my needs. And my need is one that works with my hands & wrists that don’t always. That works to do the basic thing it’s meant to do. That’s not pure junk.

So I ask of y’all, if you have an excellent can opener that fits those needs, please send me a recommendation. The cheaper the better, but functionality first! 💪🏼

The VIDEO! THIS guy at Taco Bell in St. Joe yesterday. 🤦‍♀️ Handicapped parking is there for a reason, y’all: mainly access to ramps for easy entry. It’s NOT there so lazy, entitled repair guys can park there. ALSO, he double parked, taking up an important spot PLUS half of the hashed space. If yo don’t know what those are for, it’s to be able to get a wheelchair out, to allow space for a ramp, or other assistive needs.

I believe the woman in the pic who was waving & gesturing to the lot surrounding us was highly suggesting he use any of the other MANY free spots available, including those directly across from him. (It has been confirmed it was the store manager.) There were maybe 5 of us in the whole lot. 🙄 He waited until she left then proceeded to walk to the back door. When no one answered, he walked to the front with a small bag.

Seeing that he had no intention of moving - when even parking near the door alongside the sidewalk would not have blocked the ramp - I used his opening of the truck door to get the number of the company. I called and immediately got ahold of someone who right off agreed this should not be happening. He said he would call the worker & let him know. I let this guy know that if the worker did not move that truck within 5 minutes, I’d be blowing up their company on Facebook.

And here comes the guy outside on his phone, slamming his truck toward the lot where I was parked, only to reverse & ram it into a space beside the HC spots. Because it’s a long walk you know? 🤦‍♀️ But I made him walk it twice. 🤣

Not all disabilities, even physical ones, are visible. That doesn’t not mean that guys like this should be able to park there. He had no HC plate or placard. There were options, close ones, and I never even saw him carry anything in or out larger than a purse. 😐

Big thanks to the employer who acted quickly. 🫶 You are appreciated! I don’t want that worker to lose his job. I want him to gain a lesson.

Be kind. Be considerate. Those spots are there to assist those who NEED them.

(I posted pics , too, so look for them, showing more details a bit better, but FB won’t let me post vids & pics in the same post for some reason!)

Saw a need today. Met it in my own, small way. May not have fixed the situation, but maybe it provided some tiny bit of comfort & some HOPE. See something, DO something.
