My manual can opener just went into the trash. 🗑️
I bought 2 large cans of baked beans at Ollie’s this week, for an easy protein option with no prep except opening the can. 🥫
And this is where life took a turn. 😏
I have an electric can opener. My arthritic hands & wrists often prevent me from using a manual. I love my electric, but there are times when a manual is a better option, like these bigger cans.
Well today I discovered that, not only has mine rusted, but also the cogs in the gears don’t line up properly. Turning the handle was just futile effort. 😩
So I got my pliers & tried to adjust the alignment. I got the cogs catching & turning the cutter…at first. Of course, that didn’t last long, so I adjusted again.
By now my hands are losing grip, & my wrists are shooting pains down my forearm, & I’m still not gaining much ground on accessing my beans. 🫘
Out come the pliers again, & I’m straining to bend the gears ⚙️ juuust enough, when off pops a plastic handle. 😤
Mind you, I’d just told myself this darn tool was in prime real estate when it only gets used less than once a month. I’d planned to tuck it in to an upper cabinet once the job was complete.
Now I’m frustrated, my hands & wrists are making me cringe with every turn, & I’m considering if using a hammer & knife to get my beans would be overkill. 🔪 🔨
I give it a couple more adjustments, bear down with just the effort needed to get the lid off without harming my body further, & finally! Pay dirt!
Maybe if I just do these adjustments every time… Why spend money on another when I only need… I could probably just…NO! I tell myself this is the LAST TIME! 🗑️
And so I’m sitting here on Walmart’s website looking for a new can opener.
How will I know if it’s a good one? How do I trust the reviews? Do I really want to spend that much? And did my “savings” by buying these giant cans (oh, crap, there’s a second one in the pantry that I’ll have to open someday soon 😫) really “save” me anything?
All I know is, I’m done fighting with cheap tools. I need one that works with my abilities, that meets my needs. And my need is one that works with my hands & wrists that don’t always. That works to do the basic thing it’s meant to do. That’s not pure junk.
So I ask of y’all, if you have an excellent can opener that fits those needs, please send me a recommendation. The cheaper the better, but functionality first! 💪🏼
