June is California Avocado Month! πŸ₯‘

As summer begins, the California Avocado Commission (CAC) is marking the start of peak avocado season β€” with 2026 looking like a great year. The harvest is projected to reach 330 million pounds, meaning consumers can expect a plentiful supply of fresh, high-quality California avocados through the end of summer.

California produces approximately 90% of the nation's domestic avocado crop, grown across roughly 50,000 acres stretching from Monterey County to San Diego. That makes the California avocado far more than a seasonal staple β€” it's a cornerstone of the state's agricultural economy, supporting thousands of farming families and local jobs across the State.

What a difference a year can make!

2025 was a record-breaking year for U.S. pistachios β€” 1.593 billion pounds harvested, the largest crop in history. Supply was high, and prices reflected that.

2026 is shaping up to be a completely different story. Bloom stress and poor nut set are pointing to a 35–40% drop in U.S. supply. Turkey and Iran, the other major global producers, are also facing shortfalls. Less supply worldwide β€” with demand still going strong.

That's the pistachio market over the two most recent crop years. From record highs to a significant tightening β€” and pricing expected to move higher as a result.

2026 California Almond Crop Estimates are in!

The USDA-NASS Subjective Forecast puts 2026 production at 2.70 billion pounds (shelled basis), down 1% from 2025, with bearing acreage declining to 1.39 million acres β€” the first recorded drop since 1995. Yield per acre holds flat at 1,940 lbs/acre.

A private crop tour conducted by Famoso Nut Company, AgWise Enterprises, and Wonderful Orchards lands at a midpoint of 2.64 billion pounds, with a range of 2.57–2.71B lbs. Notably, the 14-person tour team β€” 10 of them active growers β€” reported tighter alignment in their individual estimates this year compared to 2025.

Both reports point to the same underlying shift: California's almond orchard base is contracting. An estimated 47,500+ acres were removed over the past year, while new plantings have slowed dramatically. Non-bearing acreage has fallen roughly 70% since its 2021 peak, with over 245,000 acres of orchards now 20+ years old and limited younger acreage coming in behind them.

Worth noting: with the Almond Board's decision to discontinue funding for the USDA Objective Measurement Report, today's Subjective Forecast stands as the sole official USDA estimate for 2026 until harvest.

The USDA NASS and California Department of Food & Agriculture have released the 2025 Crop Grape Acreage Report.

California's grape industry continues to contract, with wine grape acreage declining to 540,000 acres (↓6.9% year-over-year) and table grape acreage falling to 118,000 acres (↓1.7%).

Leading wine grape varieties by acreage:
πŸ”΄ Cabernet Sauvignon β€” 90,040 acres
🟑 Chardonnay β€” 83,262 acres
πŸ”΄ Pinot Noir β€” 44,936 acres
πŸ”΄ Zinfandel β€” 34,099 acres

Leading table grape variety:
🟣 Flame Seedless β€” 10,506 acres

Notably, more than 21,000 acres of vineyards were removed over the past twelve months, reflecting broader trends of industry consolidation and softening demand across the wine grape sector.
