In 1887, San Diego was in the middle of one of the biggest booms in its history. Fueled by the arrival of the railroad just two years earlier, the city’s population exploded from only a few thousand residents to an estimated 30,000–40,000 people. New homes, businesses, hotels, and neighborhoods seemed to appear overnight as investors poured into the city believing San Diego would become the dominant port and commercial center of the West Coast.
The downtown skyline shown here reflects that era of rapid growth and optimism. In 1887, land values were skyrocketing, construction was happening across the city, and San Diego was being marketed nationwide as the “Booming Metropolis of the Southwest.” While the real estate frenzy would collapse the following year, many of the foundations of modern San Diego were laid during this remarkable period of growth.
