This weekend in San Diego has a little something for everyone! ☀️ The Garden Fair is happening Saturday at the Natural History Museum if you're into that. NASCAR is taking over Naval Base Coronado the same day, so if you love fast cars and ocean views, that's your spot! Sunday you can head down to the Maritime Museum for Father's Day on the Waterfront, and San Diego FC has games going on through the 26th at a few different locations around town. ⚽️

San Diego's $118 million budget shortfall resulted in reductions to community services starting July 1. Six library branches will see reduced hours, including Central, La Jolla, Point Loma, and Rancho Bernardo. Some will lose Saturday afternoon hours, others will lose weekday hours entirely.

For rec centers, 13 locations are dropping from 60 to 40 operating hours per week. Centers in Districts 4, 8, and 9 will maintain their current hours. Arts grant funding drops from $11.8 million this year to roughly $9 million next year, with the Prebys Foundation contributing $3 million of that directly to grant recipients. The city and Prebys have not yet finalized how those grants will be distributed.

To put that in perspective, there have only been three "very strong" El Niño events in the last 50 years. The last time conditions were this intense, California saw some of the wettest winters on record.

Here is your May 2026 market update for San Diego ☀️ Detached home prices are holding at $1.1M and attached homes are sitting at $675K. Detached inventory is down nearly 25%, with pending sales up on both sides. 5% for detached and 8.6% for attached, which means buyers are still active.

Nationally, more inventory is coming to market and the median price is up to $417K. Things are moving, just at a steadier pace.

The proposed redevelopment of San Diego's City Operations Building fell through in March when Orum Capital withdrew from negotiations. The developer cited the updated term sheet from the city, saying the project no longer aligned with their financial and strategic objectives.

Orum Capital had been the only interested bidder, with plans for 225 residential units and ground-floor retail under a 99-year ground lease. The city says it has no immediate plans to put the property back on the market, until it settles a broader redevelopment plan for San Diego.

Ballots will continue to be counted through the week, so the final result is not confirmed yet. As of Tuesday night, 58% of San Diego voters opposed Measure A, which would have taxed owners of non-primary homes $8,000 a year starting in 2027.

The measure was estimated to affect around 5,100 homes locally and would have exempted certain situations like military service or a move to a care facility. The next vote count update is Thursday at 6pm.

I posted about this about 72 weeks ago when SeaWorld first proposed swapping fireworks for drones, and it's officially happening. The California Coastal Commission gave unanimous approval for a one-year pilot program at SeaWorld San Diego.

The commission's own ecologist reviewed the project alongside the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and concluded that impacts to migratory birds and coastal resources are unlikely to be significant, especially compared to fireworks.

That said, if noise, light, or bird strike thresholds are exceeded, shows would have to stop until changes are made. San Diego City Council President Joe LaCava testified in support, noting that residents in the area around Mission Bay have long pushed for a quieter, more environmentally friendly alternative. 🚁✨
