Florida has exactly one naturally warm mineral spring, and it sits inside a public park in Sarasota County. Warm Mineral Springs Park in North Port surrounds an hourglass shaped sinkhole roughly 230 feet deep and 236 feet across, holding water that hovers near 85 degrees every day of the year. The mineral concentration is among the highest of any natural spring in the United States, which is why more than 150,000 people arrive annually to float, wade and soak.
What lies below is just as remarkable. Divers and archaeologists have recovered the remains of more than 20 Paleoindians here, including what is considered the oldest known intentional burial in North America, along with bones from giant ground sloths and saber toothed cats. The spring and its historic buildings, including the distinctive Cyclorama, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the city is now investing $16.7 million to rehabilitate them.
