Sad to hear that Indigenous has closed after 15 years. It was one of my favorite Sarasota restaurants and one of those places that simply felt like Sarasota.

It’s also a reminder that if we want a vibrant, distinctive downtown, we have to support the local businesses that make it that way. I don’t want downtown Sarasota to become a collection of the same restaurant chains and corporate shops you can find anywhere.

The independent restaurants, shops and small businesses give downtown its personality, diversity and sense of place.

So this week, choose local. Try that independent restaurant. Stop into that neighborhood shop. Support the people who make Sarasota feel like Sarasota.

Mornings like this are why I love living downtown Sarasota.

Most mornings, Martha and I simply pick a direction and start walking. A different street, a new route, maybe a stop along the Bayfront—and always something to enjoy along the way.
