**How Do You Reinvent Yourself When You Move Somewhere New?**

Moving sounds straightforward on paper.

Find a house. Pack. Move. Unpack.

But anyone who has relocated knows there's another side to it: you suddenly have to figure out your whole life again.

Where will you go to the doctor? Who will cut your hair? Where do you take your car? Who's a trustworthy plumber? Where will you meet people? What organizations will you join? Where will your kids go to school? And maybe even—what will you do for work?

The answers can look very different depending on your stage of life.

A family with school-age children may quickly build connections through school, sports and other parents. Someone relocating for work may start with colleagues. A person moving in retirement may have to be much more intentional about finding activities, friendships and a sense of community.

One thing I've learned about relocation is that finding the house is only one part of finding your place.

Give yourself time to explore. Talk to neighbors. Ask for recommendations. Try different restaurants, clubs, gyms, churches, volunteer organizations or activities. Don't feel like you need to have everything figured out during your first month.

And don't assume you need to recreate exactly what you had before.

Sometimes moving gives you the opportunity to decide what you want this next chapter to look like.

That's one reason I spend so much time talking with relocation buyers about lifestyle *before* we start narrowing down homes. The community you choose can have an enormous impact on how easily you build that new life.

**The goal isn't simply to move somewhere new. It's to eventually feel like you belong there.**
