Northwest Indiana has been through something truly devastating this week.

This derecho ripped through our communities with a level of damage we have not seen in years. Trees are down, roads are blocked, homes are damaged, and hundreds of thousands across Lake and Porter County are still without power.

According to NIPSCO, more than 300,000 customers were affected across the region. Entire circuits need to be rebuilt, poles were snapped, and crews are working around the clock. Full restoration will take time because the damage is so widespread and severe. Hobart, Merrillville, Portage, Crown Point, and surrounding areas are still heavily impacted.

Everyone is living the same disaster in different ways. Some families lost roofs or major parts of their homes. Others are dealing with the heat and the stress of having no power. No one is completely okay, and everyone is trying to get through this the best they can.

This is when patience matters.

This is when kindness matters.

This is when we remember to love our neighbors, even when we are tired, hot, frustrated, and overwhelmed.

I have seen churches offering hot free meals. The Hobart Community Center is open for anyone who needs to charge their devices or simply get out of the house for a bit. Neighbors are checking on neighbors. That is what Northwest Indiana does. We show up for each other.

We need to keep showing up.

We need to stop the negativity and the blame.

We need patience, determination, and basic human decency to get through this.

We are extremely blessed to even have electricity in our lives. Millions of people around the world live without it every single day. Losing it reminds us how much we take for granted.

Let’s come together.

Let’s persevere.

Let’s be the community that lifts each other up instead of tearing each other down.

Northwest Indiana is strong.
