Tallahassee has a hidden mosaic and nobody is talking about it.

In 1961, Leon County put a two-story tile map of Florida on the outside wall of the courthouse annex on Calhoun Street. Hand-assembled right here in Tallahassee, with the Old Capitol as the centerpiece inside a sunburst spreading across the entire state.

When the courthouse expanded in 1990, a new wall went up right over it. Officials offered it to anyone willing to remove it. Nobody took it.

If you walk up to those windows on the Calhoun Street side and cup your hands against the glass, you can still see the tiles in the dark.

The county looked into uncovering it years ago. Too expensive. Too damaged. And nobody has pushed the question since.

It’s still back there. A forgotten piece of Tallahassee history, sealed inside a wall most people walk past without a second thought.
