The Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate New York is passionately dedicated to creating opportunities for underrepresented minority actors in the Capital Region. I recently had the thrilling opportunity to collaborate with its founder, Jean-Remy Monnay, and participate in the debut showcasing of an exciting extension of the organization. The Onyx Ensemble had the privilege to perform at the Albany Cap Center during Wine and Dine for the Arts.

This innovative program is all about introducing music performance to the younger generation in the Capital Region. Over the past few years, I’ve had the incredible privilege of teaching at Oakwood Techniques and Music and Arts. These experiences have shown me just how vital and crucial exposure to these disciplines is today, more than ever before. Yes, with today’s technology, creating content and making music is easier than ever, but it also brings a decrease in collaboration, community building, competition, and accountability.

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to befriend so many talented and disciplined musicians in the three years I’ve lived in the area, and their generosity has allowed me to develop my craft tenfold. Organizations like this not only demonstrate the power of community but also instill the confidence that comes from having a discipline.

* Utility Bill Tips:
With utility bills on the rise, finding smart ways to keep your home cozy and save money is essential. Here are some practical tips:

Heavy Duty Thermal Curtains: These are fantastic for trapping warm air inside. Prices range from $15 to $45, and depending on your climate, you could save 10%-20%. Plus, they help reduce noise.

Large Area Rugs: If you have tile floors, adding a few area rugs can help keep the heat from escaping. You can find them starting at $15. Remember, the more you invest, the better they perform in retaining warmth.

Furniture Placement: Ensure your heat source isn’t blocked by furniture. If possible, use ceiling fans to circulate the heat more evenly throughout your home.

Bundle Up: Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the best. Keep the heat lower and enjoy the comfort of wearing layers while relaxing at home.

Feel free to share any other tips you might have in the comments below!

* Buyer’s Tip: Consider making a larger down payment early on. While it may require a significant upfront investment, it will enable you to utilize that time to enhance your creditworthiness. This proactive approach will ultimately result in cost savings on your mortgage and mitigate potential unforeseen challenges. Additionally, the savings generated can be allocated towards future repairs, providing financial security and peace of mind.

I’ve been teaching at Music and Arts for just over a year now, and it’s been such a rewarding experience. The other instructors and staff have been incredibly supportive from the start, helping me manage my schedule and keep the students engaged. This job has really made me think about how I approach new ideas in my own playing, helping me spot things that might be holding me back. It’s also taught me a lot about patience and how to communicate better. If you’re interested in one-on-one lessons for any instrument, just reach out and we can arrange a free lesson for you! It’s never too late to learn something new, and playing an instrument is a wonderful experience.

This upcoming semester, Oakwood Techniques is thrilled to offer a variety of exciting classes, including acting, dance, and percussion ensemble. I have had the pleasure of working for this wonderful program for four semesters now, and it is truly amazing to dedicate our time and effort to the children in our community who have a passion for the arts. The classes are completely FREE, which is a fantastic opportunity for many, but please note that there is limited availability, so it’s important to sign up early.

For the following semester, our percussion ensemble is set to be particularly special. We will be providing introductory instruction for those who are new to percussion, ensuring that everyone can participate and learn at their own pace. Additionally, Ian and I have discovered some incredible pieces that we are eager to teach the students. These pieces will add a new level of excitement and challenge to the ensemble, making it a little more intense than previous semesters. As a result, we do expect students to be fully engaged and stay focused during the classes. It promises to be an enriching and rewarding experience for all involved.

If you know any children who are looking for an enriching after-school activity, I highly encourage you to consider enrolling them in these classes. There is truly nothing like the performing arts to inspire creativity, build confidence, and foster a sense of community. It’s a wonderful way for children to express themselves and explore their talents in a supportive and fun environment. Please spread the word and help us reach as many young aspiring artists as possible.

* SELLERS TIP: Remember, the more work you’re willing to put into your property, the higher the potential return. Buyers are willing to pay for a piece of mind, so focus on the essentials: roofing, electrical wiring, boiler, foundation. Although aesthetics can determine a first impression, buyers are willing to look past a tacky wall paper or old carpeting if they know they’ll have a reliable boiler in this New York winter.
