🚨 That pipe on your roof isn’t just there for looks — and it shouldn’t be capped!

This is a plumbing vent, and it plays an important role in your home’s plumbing system. It allows sewer gases to safely escape above the roof and, just as importantly, allows air into the plumbing system so water can drain properly and your traps can maintain their water seal.

Capping it off can create problems with:
🚫 Slow or poorly draining pipes
🚫 Gurgling toilets and drains
🚫 Sewer gases being pushed into the home
🚫 Loss of proper pressure balance in your plumbing system

The goal isn’t to make every roof pe*******on disappear. The goal is to make sure each one is properly installed, sealed, and doing the job it was designed to do.

So before someone says, “Can we just cap that?” — know what it is first. 🏠🔨

🚨 TAPE IS NOT A PLUMBING REPAIR.

This is exactly why home inspections matter. 👀

What you’re looking at is a hose bib that has been leaking — and instead of properly repairing the connection, someone attempted to seal it from the outside with tape.

Sure, it may slow the leak down temporarily… but it doesn’t actually fix the problem.

And that small leak can become a much bigger headache:

💧 Water intrusion
🪵 Rot and deterioration inside the wall
🦠 Moisture-related growth
❄️ Freeze damage
💰 Expensive repairs down the road

A fresh layer of tape can make something look repaired without actually addressing why it’s leaking in the first place.

A full-on nest tucked between the framing and ductwork and yes, that is exactly what it looks like. 🪹😳

🚨 THIS IS WHY YOU LOOK IN THE ATTIC. 🚨

At first glance, this may just look like a few ducts…

But look closely 👀 the dryer vent and bathroom exhaust vents are terminating into the attic instead of venting to the exterior.

That means all that warm, moisture-filled air is being released directly into the attic space. Over time, that moisture can contribute to condensation, wet insulation, wood deterioration, and potentially mold growth.

And this is exactly why a home inspection should be about more than just what you can see inside the living space.

🏠 The house may look perfect downstairs… while the real problem is happening above your head.

🚨 THIS is why your HVAC inspection matters.

Look closely at this photo. 👀 You can actually see the A-coil inside the AC plenum, and the plenum itself is not properly sealed.

That means conditioned air can escape right into the garage instead of making it into your home. 🥴

So what does that mean?

💨 Less conditioned air reaching your rooms
💰 Potentially higher energy bills
🌡️ Rooms that don’t heat/cool the way they should
⚙️ Your HVAC system working harder than necessary

And here’s the part that gets me: you can have a brand-new HVAC component and still have an inefficient system if the ductwork and plenum aren’t properly sealed.

This is why a home inspection shouldn’t stop at “Does the AC turn on?”

You want to know: Where is the air actually going?

Because sometimes the problem isn’t the equipment. It’s everything around it. 🏠🔍
