06/04/2026

This morning, Jane Irvine from The Mid-Ohio Valley Ringers, spoke to The Wood County Rotary Club at the Vienna Community Building in Jackson Park. Jane talked about the history of the organization and how they were organized. There 6 1/2 octaves of bells that they use. Bells started in Switzerland before moving over to England. PT Barnum actually brought bells to the United States. The group practices weekly and will be doing a Christmas concert at First Presbyterian later this year. Members of our club participated in bell ringing and were able to learn some techniques to making beautiful music.

This morning, Candace Black, Director of Resource Development and Darlene Murphy, CEO of The Boys and Girls Club of Parkersburg, spoke to The Wood County Rotary Club at the Vienna Community Building in Jackson Park. They shared information on the various programs offered at The Boys and Girls Club and how they serve the community and help local children. The organization has been in the community for 60 years serving about 300 children each day. They charge $30 per child for their participation in their programs for the school year and $30 for the summer and seek grants and local organizations to help them offer the various programs they provide. They help guide children and direct them through leadership and mentorship programs that help them avoid drugs and crime. The building is 42,000 square feet and they have 4 vans that assist with transportation as well as school buses that drop off daily at their location. They have a swimming pool and have it open year round. They will soon have an outdoor renovation project that will include a playground and are currently replacing their roof. They are working with the city of Vienna for a summer program for their residents. An annual golf tournament is a major fundraising event for them each year and will be held on Monday, June 1. Thank you all for the work you are doing for the children of our community. For more information on the services they provide or memberships, call 304-485-6434.
