On September 19th in the South Carolina Lowcountry, the famed Summerville Sweet Tea Festival takes place, bringing thousands of visitors to historic downtown for a day built around one of the South’s favorite drinks! From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Hutchinson Square and nearby streets fill with food trucks, artists, craft vendors, local businesses, live music, and a Kid Zone, and admission to the festival is free. Sweet tea takes center stage as different makers serve their own brews, and guests can taste them before voting for the winner of the Tea of the Year contest. Summerville’s ties to tea stretch back to the late 1700s, when French botanist André Michaux planted tea in the area. Years later, Dr. Charles Shepard created the Pinehurst Tea Plantation in Summerville, which became the first successful commercial tea farm operation in the United States. While downtown, stop beside Town Hall to see “Mason,” the more than 15-foot-tall container used when Summerville set a Guinness World Record in 2016 with 2,524 gallons of sweet tea. Between the cold tea, Southern food, music, shopping, and lively downtown setting, it’s a fun celebration of the drink that has become part of Summerville’s identity.
