We spy the Lofts in this incredible view of downtown!

About 85 million years ago something roughly a thousand feet across came out of the sky and hit what is now Elmore County at tremendous speed. Central Alabama was under a shallow sea at the time. The impact punched a crater five miles wide.

Wetumpka is built inside it.

For most of the town's history nobody knew. It just looked like hills. Then geologists started finding shocked quartz and shattered rock in the ridges, and the whole story came apart and reassembled. The hills ringing the town are the crater rim. Downtown sits in the bowl.

So you have brick storefronts, the Coosa River running whitewater right through the middle of it, the old Bibb Graves bridge, and one of the best preserved marine impact craters on the planet, all in a town of about 7,000 people.

They call it the Impact Crater City now. Fair enough.

$8,043,523 in private investment

That's more than $15 million invested in our historic downtown district.
