So I spent a lot of time in college in Pennsylvania, being ridiculed as being from Cow-Hampshire, even though by the late 1970’s, most of the milk cow herds had been culled in New Hampshire. Most people in other parts of the country have no clue that New Hampshire has one of the most highly educated and prosperous populations in the nation. That is why it is always so frustrating when the national press comes to the state for the first in the nation primary; disparaging us as simps and rednecks; searching for a barn as a backdrop for their bucolic, staged settings. Oh by the way, the median household income in Andover MA., for averaged 2019-23 was $167,591.
I’ll save you the trouble of googling, by telling you, in case you don’t know that Newfields is on the Seacoast, just north of Exeter and is home to Governor Chris Sununu. But even I didn’t know where Madbury was located: it is adjacent to Durham and Dover. New Castle, is on the ocean, and used to always come in at number one, but has fallen to fourth place. And remember, these numbers are old and house prices have increased.

Here are some back of an envelope numbers, and mortgage brokers have the means to adjust the ratios a bit, but here you go and here’s the rub; According to Bank of America’s home affordability calculator, buyers making the very high median household income of $189,450 (2023), and putting 20% down, with 1,000 of outside debt payments, could only afford a home priced at $657,859 or $227,000 short of the median price in town. Your monthly payment at 6.75% interest would be $4,418. Oh by the way, the median household income in America. according to Neilsberg, is $69,021.
