Why shoot in the Cape Winelands? Because Europe’s off-season is our golden hour. The light of Provence, the scale of Napa and rare privacy, all on one estate, and just one or two hours ahead of Europe.

While Europe sits through grey winter days, the Winelands are bathed in summer light. From November to March, crews get long, dry days and golden evenings that stretch the shooting schedule. Clients back home can approve shots in real time, and nobody loses a day to jet lag.

The rand goes further too. Location fees, crew, catering and accommodation costs far less than Provence or Tuscany. Cape Town’s experienced production industry supplies everything from skilled crews to equipment hire. Franschhoek is about an hour from the city, with beaches, mountains and the Karoo all within easy reach.

NEW: Monastic calm, minus the monks? Inspired by a monastery, our newest Karoo shoot location is Mura Retreat, near Barrydale, a dream for film producers, photographers and stylists.

Its calm, muted palette is the perfect backdrop for wellness, fashion, food and decor shoots. But the rockstar pool steals the show, mirroring mountains and endlessly changing cloud reflections. Domed ceilings and arches bring a spiritual calm, while shadows and silhouettes dance through the central cloister.

In the Karoo, the light does half the work. Mura Retreat’s architecture does the rest.

• The curvaceous canopy walkway at Kogelberg Canopy House gives elevated views that feel as if you're in the middle of nowhere yet you're only 90 minutes’ drive from Cape Town in Betty's Bay. The organic pod-shaped pool and mountain views make the perfect backdrop.

• Synergy Tree House is ideal for yoga and fitness shoots. It’s set in a canopy of protected milkwoods, with a beautiful entertaining deck and spectacular views along the Scarborough coastline. The upper bedroom feels as snug as a real tree house.

Did you know that when much of the country reaches for their coats and heaters, our shoot locations in tropical KwaZulu-Natal are basking in sunshine?

This is where our winter photoshoots quietly come into their own. It’s our winter secret: warm days (yes, temperatures shift from 20 to 27 degrees this week!), golden light and lush green scenery.

For photographers and production teams, KZN is one of those rare destinations that works beautifully in every season – but especially now. And besides, King Shaka International Airport is a breeze and the drive through the sugar-cane fields to most coastal locations is less than 40 minutes. Couldn’t be easier!
