Throwing it back to 1985 in Cape Town.

Cape Town was already starting to take shape into the recognisable skyline we know today. Ten years later, Baker Street Properties would open its Cape Town branch and become part of the city’s commercial property story.
Back then, a few iconic buildings were still years away from changing the skyline. Landmarks like Cape Town International Convention Centre, Portside Tower, and many of the modern Foreshore developments didn’t exist yet.

In 1996, the office looked very different too. Wired desk phones. The excitement of something called a fax machine. And paper files… lots and lots of paper files.

Fast forward to 2026 and the city has established itself as one of South Africa’s leading business hubs. Most deals, marketing, and communication now happen electronically and at lightning speed.

But some things never change. Baker Street Properties' co-founders John and Dave are still working side-by-side, closing iconic deals and building on relationships formed years ago.

Oh… and the files. John still has lots of files.

The South African Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has announced that the repo rate will increase by 0.25% to 7.00%, with the prime lending rate increasing to 10.50%.

Although inflation expectations remain relatively well anchored, headline CPI accelerated to 4.0% in April 2026 from 3.1% in March, driven largely by higher fuel and energy costs linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Core inflation has also edged higher, suggesting that broader price pressures are beginning to emerge.

While the rand has shown relative resilience in recent weeks, ongoing volatility in global markets and higher imported fuel costs continue to present upside risks to inflation. The SARB has reiterated its commitment to maintaining inflation close to the new 3% target over the medium term, even as near-term inflation is expected to remain elevated.

In the Western Cape, the commercial property sector continues to demonstrate resilience. Demand remains comparatively strong, supported by regional business confidence and semigration trends, while rental growth remains stable and vacancies are relatively low compared to other major metros.
